I recently purchased my berlinetta and honestly... I need help. Its doing a whole lot of things and I just don't know. I love cars and want to learn all I can about them but I'm hoping someone can help me. I want someone that knows their stuff and can give this poor confused girl some helpful hints, pointers, tips

I'm hoping someone can actually come take a look and listen. I could try to explain what all is going on with it but I really don't think I could explain it well. Plus I could very well be missing some indicator that would clear it up.

I know its a long shot but...can anyone help?

Its running rich. Idles rough and dies. When it idles rough its at about 500-650 rpms's so its not holding a good idle. I think it has a vacuum leak (PO said it might) and I'm planning on rebuilding the carb. I have to wait for my manuals to come in because I've never done it before. Wiring is kinda screwy too. I hooked up a deck and all of a sudden I learned I have power locks... they're posessed lol locking and unlocking.

Honestly there probably and most likely is more. Oh also I have an oil leak I'm not sure where its coming from. I think its coming from the valve gaskets. I replaced one but couldn't get to the other before dark (I live in apartments and they strictly don't allow workibg on vehicles so I've been scrounging for places to work on my car). The gasket I did get to was dry and busted so I'm going to assume the other is in similar quality and its the one I think is leaking.

I haven't had the car long so I'm aure there's more to come and I'm extremely low on funds so no shops for me. All DIY and there's plenty I don't know how to do.

Propane torch? Ummmm yeah no... don't have one of those lying around. I think the PO might have wired them up wrong but I haven't had a chance to chase the wire.

PROPANE TORCH IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO LOCATE A VACUUM LEAK. OPEN THE VALVE AND SEND SOME UNBURNED PROPANE AROUND SUSPECT AREA OF ENGINE INTAKE / MANIFOLD ETC... IF THE IDLE SUDDENLY JUMPS UP YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR VACUUM LEAK. REPLACE GASKET / SEAL AND CONTINUE ON...THERE MITE BE MORE LEAKS. ( BTW DONT SMOKE WHILE DOING THIS )

Someone told me to spray carb cleaner on the engine/surrounding areas while its running. Does it work and is it safe? @ your no smoking comment if you hear about a horrible car explosion involving a 23 yr old chick in tucson.... oops lol

That's right I'm the same age as your car.... many good things were made that year haha! Yeah, most girls are all about the look of a car... don't get me wrong I enjoy a beatiful frame and the lines of a body but ultimately its what's powering it that I love.

Anyways, I'd recommend the propane trick. It works well, just go slow, and pick a day when it's not windy lol

I do exactly what I like and want to do. I travel when I want all over, I volunteer all over, I paint, play paintball, and try all the things I want to try. I've done the racing thing.... not part of what I want anymore. More power to the people that do its just not my thing anymore

My friend in PA has convinced me that I will mess up if I try to rebuild the carb and now I'm all freaked out. I'm doubting my ability to do it and that just suck. I honestly haven't done it before but I did purchase the some books on it. Is it really difficult?

Also, I'm going to just replace all the hoses...wasn't too expensive for the kit and it just seems easier in the long run so hopefully that will help too.

Replacing the hoses is not a bad idea. As for carbs, I built my first one when I was 12 years old. (Was my sisters '69 chevelle ss.) That went perfectly. It's really easy, just make sure you are working in a place where parts cannot roll/slide away. If you are patient, you will be just fine. Now TUNING a carb... Thats another matter... STILL just a matter of patience.

You will be fine, trust me, don't let people discourage you! The first type of work I did outside of oil changes and plugs was rebuilding my carb on my 74 Impala. Everything went beautifully and she ran perfect after that; and all I had was one book, which wasn't very informative might I add! Like I said don't worry, besides if you screw it up you could always just buy a new one they aren't that expensive!
