but in the video the lidar cop is on a bridge and can get you coming or going and the units are parked on the shoulder.
If he gets a jammed signal they will stop you anyway as jamming a signal is illegal.

In the mail speeding tickets are still aways off. You need 3 things:
Speed of vehicle
Location
Speed limit.
Eventually they will get approval for computer recorders with enough memory that during your annual vehicle checkup(yes it will go to yearly) your driving habits and location will be downloaded and sent to a State data base.
This will be interlaced with a GIS street map that includes speed limits.
With your computer speed record, GPS location record, and the street map, Bingo here's your ticket.

Except that LAPD or Sheriffs would probably respond with an air unit first to examine the scene before commiting any patrol units.

And CHP has jurisdiction anywhere in the state.

as far as i know radar jammers are illegal, but laser jammers aren't. thats old info though, it could have changed in the last year or two.

edit: illegal in Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

There are some people already doing this to reduce their insurance rates.
One hold up is the privacy issue. Cheating husbands/wives, etc.
And they dont have the GIS maps or the software to interface them, but it will come.
As it is, all 2008 vehicles will have Federal mandated traction control. And with that I see the removal of the traction on/off button.
I think its the new Mustang that refuses to do a burnout.
And some rental companies were fining people speeding (over 65), after the fact. No notice just additonal charges to your CC. And quite large charges.

That sounds like the infamous "black box" some new cars are supposed to have. From what I've heard, they were installed at the factory for insurance purposes in the event of an accident.

They are supposed to record only a few seconds or so, so that an insurance company can have the data just prior to the impact.

The ones that the "volunteers" have record a lot of data so over a years time the insurace company can download it and review the insureds driving habits.

The rental car one just recorded when the vehicle expeeded the States highest speed limit. After returning the car the data would be downoloaded and if you exceeded the speed limit they would tack a charge on your credit card.

Thebox you are refering to is in my 2000 SS. Supposidly if the airbag goes off the data at the time is saved. However I was told by someone that it also recorded engine overspeed as in the rev limiter and other paramaters,I'm not sure what they were.I think this must have started with the totally computer controled engine.Pretty much the last "New" car I will ever be buying. Almost all new vehicles are "drive by wire". The only mechanical drive items are the steering wheel and brakes.
And as soon as the Govt requires traction control and stability control (Ford turnovers) all driving will be computer controlled.
All drive by wire info is computer recorded. How much is still a secret, the Govt only allows the last ~10 sec before a crash. \
The computers are like survaliance cameras, just holds so much data then starts recording over old data.
