From Phx to Redondo area

Hey guys, looks like Im heading your way in December. Anyone in that area? I've lived in AZ all of my 30 years and I'm sick to death of it. So i'm up and leaving this dust bowl behind. My friend has family there and she says we will have a place 2 blocks from the beach. Other than that, I know nothing so it will be an adventure for sure.

Welcome
Other than the weather, you won't see much difference, one big city to another.
Not sure you want to bring a car to this State, CARB is similar to the SS.

I'm right down the street, and I used to live in Chandler.

I already thought of the emissions. Thats why Im "selling" it to my brother here in AZ.

Wheres the closest race track? I imagine it's pretty close to sea level so the times should be very nice in the winter.

"Wheres the closest race track? I imagine it's pretty close to sea level"

Unfortunately that is not the case. The track we use is California Raceway in Fontana. I think the track elevation is around 1100 feet but the air density is usually fairly high like 2000-2500 feet. At the last race it was between 3200 and 3500 feet which is terrible are for around here and the times suffered.

I would think the traffic will be lighter coming into California as a lot of people are leaving.

Except from the AZ border thru needles, where the freeway median foliage is the gumball equipped cop car.

Have you been to Redondo with your GTA previously? I've noticed a red GTA parked in a driveway on Broadway and never saw it again.

Yuck, track conditions there rival here then, craptastic. Oh well, Im not moving there for the racing, but it would've been nice.

Never been to Redondo but you'll see me cruising around if the traffic permits on my day off. Just look for the AZ Freedom Plate on the back.

If you can’t get the AC fixed in your Camaro before the 7th you should bring out this ‘track car’ you’re always talking about and show us all what time it is. I bet it won’t be a quarter as good as the excuse you‘re going use as to why you can’t bring it.

How far away is Willow Springs? Ive heard of Leguna Seca. As the time comes closer, we should plan a BBQ in december. Does it snow in L.A.? Kidding, but that would be cool

LOL! You’re going to have to do much better than that Alex… I’ve got a couple of friends with B18 powered Civics and five valve hatchi’s that are all over me when we canyon run so save this “It’s only an Integra” business for someone that doesn’t know any better Oh and if ‘that Asian guy’ would stop getting caught stretching the truth then I’d probably stop putting him on blast.

Based on your posts here and on facebook you’ve got a ton of drift/grip experience and an abundance of track hours in your ‘Time Attack & Track” cars which is not only amazing for a guy your age but an asset to all of the guys here looking to get quick in their 3rd gens, me included. As per one of your posts you ran a .59 out at AMP in your Camaro your first time out and were looking to shave off a few seconds your next time out.

Well it looks like your Camaro won’t make it out because of the AC situation which is totally understandable. However now you have an opportunity to bring out one of your ‘track cars’ and join us on the 7th. It would be awesome to have someone with your experience critique my lines and overall technique. Your move buddy

It’s roughly a hundred miles from the south bay. Laguna Seca is an amazing track and to say it is challenging is a gross understatement. Between all of the clubs and organizations in the SoCal area there is always something going on that you can participate in. There is something going on at least once a month

BigWhiteGTP, you're gonna be in for a rude awakening when you get here

Especially if you like drag racing. It's pretty much dead and buried. One trip to fontana = an all day event to get 1 run in. Be careful hanging out at car meets too, especially in riverside county. You might be raided and searched for "illegal modifications". I have a fairly stout turbo buick, 11.2 at 118. It has had a broken transmission for almost a year now and I have almost no motivation to fix it if that tells you anything about the drag racing scene out here.

The adams time attack is the best thing going out here nowadays. I suggest looking into handling mods, it's a total blast.

In a lot of ways I wish I was actually moving back to America, like AZ.

Why would a car be searched for illegal modifications if it has AZ plates on it?

Because it is in california. Just like if you aren't a california resident does not entitle you to carry an AK47 in CA with a removable magazine and pistol grip even though it is legal to do so in many other states. Same goes for carrying a gun period. If its not legal here, the cops have an excuse to enforce it on anyone. Illegal modifications means anything not approved by the california air resources board. Although fortunately for you, this is kind of a legal grey area. This does not stop them from coercing you into a warrantless search.

I have had friends with out of state plates that have been searched. I have personally been harassed and ticketed for an out of state plate even though I am legally allowed to have one because of a military exemption. Nevertheless, I beat my tickets. Just a fair warning. It's also illegal to be in this state for more than 10 days after establishing residence or employment with an out of state plate or drivers license.

If you aren't savvy with the law you can get burned.

First, you have to think in a Cali state of mind. Your Arizona plates will do nothing but inquire even more to the dwellings of your car.

They will because they believe they can...

Hah. That's a good way to put it.

Put it this way BigWhiteGTP, they are right now pushing through legislation to BAN PLASTIC BAGS. Not joking here. You can't own guns, cant soup up your car, can't talk on a cell phone and drive, can't use plastic bags at the store, can't ride a dirt bike just about anywhere west of the I-15. The latest I gem I heard is that CARB wants to know why and who is buying race gas. Better have a good reason.
They've made life easy for you, no thought required, just do what they say.

can't use plastic bags at the store,
The plastic bag business lobby killed this one, this time. One of the few times I am glad private business owns politicians

New fine amounts. Since CA is broke they have increased vehicle code violations a bunch

VC 4159
$178
Notify DMV of change of address within 10 days.
Note: The fine may be reduced with valid proof of correction.
VC 12814.6
$214
Failure to obey license provisions.
VC 14600(A)
$214
Failure to notify DMV of address change within 10 days
Note: The fine may be reduced with valid proof of correction.
VC 16028(A)
$796
Failure to provide evidence of financial responsibility (insurance)
Note: This fine may be reduced with proof of insurance on or after the violation date.
VC 23123(A)
$148
Drive using wireless phone not hands free, First offense
VC 23123(A)
$256
Drive using wireless phone not hands free, For each subsequent offense.
VC 23123.5(A)
Now we wait for the comments stating "If you don't break the law you don't pay the fine".
As a CHP told us in traffic school years ago while holding up a copy of the vehicle code "If you think I can't find something in here to write you a ticket on, you are very wrong.".

Thats why I had to quit my old job working as contractor to the govt. The amount of waste and inefficiency was disgusting. They got mad when you finished things too quickly "You guys don't have enough hours on this project" so they demanded that you put more hours down. lol

Re: From Phx to Redondo area

I'd rather have guns available to everyone than only the criminals have guns. Just look at our jails and see how well our current laws work. Rules only stop honest people, they dont stop a criminal.

That said, this thread has gone way off topic. Lets try and get it back to welcoming BigWhiteGTP to California.

I thought we WERE welcoming him to California. Just turn the light off when you leave, OK?

Re: From Phx to Redondo area

No, Im still coming. Im just not going there for the strict gun and emissions laws or lack of drag racing. Im going there to get away from AZ for awhile.

What should I look into doing the first couple months Im there?

Buy a tin cup and some pencils and find a corner in the shade.
