Yeah Dude, take a week's vacation in Florida. Rent a condo for the week on the beach, change your cellphone bill to that new address online, walk into DMV with those 2 docs and old license, get your Florida Drivers licence, register car and head to the gun store :-)

My '87 GTA has never been tested. Only has 32,000 miles, but it's been in storage for 12 years parked in a storage locker in Las Vegas hot as an oven. I had RC Engineering clean the injectors and I'm about to put them back in. It's all stock now, though I was considering putting in Edelbrock 50-state legal manifold and runners. Original stock muffler is in pretty bad shape. Original cats can't be great either, were probably crap designs when new. I had to dro pt he tank and flush it. This weekend I hope to flush the fuel lines with gas & sea foam while the fuel rails are out (just flush to some hoses to drums).

Car: 88 GTA Trans Am
Engine: 5.7 liter
Re: I'm so over this 4th failed smog attempt-this is impossible
New to this and dont really know much about cars, bought my son an 88 Trans Am GTA, it failed smog. It failed at 15 mph and passed at 25 mph. I had a feeling the timing was going to be an issue. Car runs great had been sitting for over a year. Ran it for 250 miles with a couple of tanks a some seafoam. Off to the mechanic to seee what the deal is. It failed on the fuel cap functional and the Air injection, Like I said dont know much about cars but I think that will now change.

Just got back from the smog shop with the bad gross polluter news. I asked the guy to just give me the readings but he sent it to the DMV. Now its tagged as a gross polluter does this mean Im doomed?
15mph %C02 11.0 %02 2.0 HC PPM 331 C0 % 3.96 N0 PPM 326
25mph %C02 11.2 %02 2.1 HC PPM 301 C0 % 3.46 N0 PPM 197
The HC PPM should be less than 78 (15 mph) and 83 (25mph)
The C0 % should be less than .71 (15 mph) and .40 (25mph)
The test also showed the timing to be 14btdc and I am pretty sure its 6btdc will recheck but i have adjusted the timing before and the exaust always smells rich.
Recently replaced the MAF, Dist, cap, rotor, knock sensor, o2 sensor. The previous owner said he replaced the CAT 2 years ago. I dont know how he got it smogged but it could not have been legit. Not sure how many miles are on the engine but it doesnt leak or burn oil and runs ok. Its a 5.7 liter that replaced a 5 liter. I have new plugs and wires but this seems like it could be a lost cause. I knew it would probably fail but didnt expect the numbers to be so high. I dont know if anything short of a miracle will get this to pass.
This is my 17 year old sons car and he loves it. Any ideas?

Not sure when engine was changed but guess that it has around 80k miles.
Vacuum is 17 will check compression. Started changing the plugs last night and the 3 I took out looked really good. Not much carbon, no oil.

Good Luck
p.s. before the idle was a little rough and stalled occasionally ( I thought because of the new cam) but once the timing was changed it runs better and hasn't stalled since.

It passed a few weeks ago.. Took it to the Gold station in Canoga Park and they didnt know what was wrong so I took it home to change the injectors. The part number on the injectors was for a Crown Vic so replaced with correct set of Bosch. Back to the Gold station and he got the HC and C0 to pass by 1 point. He said it will most likely need a new Cat next time since it was running rich for so long.

EGR and knock sensor are different for a 5.0 vs 5.7. You need to visit Dyno Don. He and Kevin have gotten some highly modified cars to pass w/ flying colors.
