might have opportunity to move to LA

First off, mod's please do not lock this with out reading, Everything Is a real question and has to do with 3rd gens/tech...

Ok So that's out of the way, I have an opportunity to move to LA ( somewhere around pico blv and south beverly if I recall properly. ) From MD

A big factor with me moving out ( would stay for at least a year or two)

Is that I would want to bring my car with me....

I know some of you think it might be stupid, But this as a big factor for me.I would like to enjoy ,drive and go places and a job with this car.

But I know Cali is super strickt on emmisons and that stuff

.... My car has no cat( only reason why It does not have one is I forgot to buy it when doing my exhuast and remembered just as I welded it all up) ,electric cut out ( never open it though) 195 afr heads ,HSR, injectors, 268xfi cam, Long tube super comp headers( jet hot coated) Flowmaster muffler) custome burn chip from hawks ,tpi baffles opened,no ac I think that might be it for engine.

trans is a 700r4 that is going to be out of the car soon as I find a t56.

suspesion is koni yellows, eibach pro kit , umi, sfc,tq arm, panhard bar, lca, lcarb a arms, sphon k member , stock 9bolt borg warner rear end

y2k wheels with bfg kdw II rubber13'' bear track brakes front and rear , c4 seates , infinity 5 channle amp, infinity referanceses 4x6 and 6x9's and a shallow 10'' sub, alpine head unit
grant wheel,

I' sure I got more mods just can't rember all of em.
so I guess my question is how would I register it? over here I was planning on putting it on classic but the laws are different . Would I have to do a ton of work to get it legal in cali? It is not my daily driver I have a 00 jeep tj on 35's with 4.5 lift But I would sell that if I moved out to cali and pick up a beater or a bike ( 06+ r1)

I know the area abit, but not well. I would have to find a job But I would be moving in with my sister wich has lived their for the past 4 years. then I'd split the rent with her.... but back on topic

what do you guys think I would have to do or is this a smart idea? I have realy nothing keeping me here in md besides snowboarding in the winter and a decent job fixing vending machines.

THANKS !

Mo

~ EDIT ~ If anyone would like more info on my camaro ask or just click in my sig to my build thread!

In L.A. you can surf in the morning and snowboard in the afternoon and be home in time for dinner. Our cars don't rust and yes we have vending machines.
Keep your car registered in MD, until your sure your staying. Replacing the Cat is no big deal.
I say go for it.

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

The long tubes are out if you stay. Would have to go with shorties. Dyno Don has 1 3/4 short style with air tubes that can you can get away with in regards to smog techs. (His aren't C.A.R.B. approved but techs wouldn't know the difference)

Cat would have to be a Cali specific unless you get the 49 state version and install it on the car before it crosses the border.

The only loop-hole in cali in regards to classic is the historical designation. To get this your car MUST be 25 years old & up to qualify. However, you would have to get it registered first, go through a smog & pass, before you can achieve this ability. Then once you do, then you can get the designation and not worry about smog any longer (loop hole). There are restriction to that designation in regards to driving (miles driven) but nobody knows the specifics and you would be fine. I have a couple buddies who have gone down this road and have had no issues..

Just some thoughts that may help you out =)

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

There are members in our local club in Orange County that have 400+ RWHP. they have heavily ported short tube runners (welded higher to allow more porting) matching plenum, base and heads. Custom cold air intakes and custom exhaust along with a custom dyno-tune and a lot money later 400hp. Oh almost forgot you'll need a good cam and all that goes with it. I'm sure there is more to it but that's a good start.
Good news is the HSR is California legal. Although California keeps making it harder to pass all the time.

With all of it's stupid rules and regulations is does have very good weather.

Sorry the Holley Stealth Ram is not legal I was thinking of the Super ram.

Someone from Cali should chime in, but if the vehicle isn't registered "in" Cali, then I don't see how they would be able to "make" you change anything...

If the car isn't too loud to attract attention, I wouldn't feel too concerned.

If you get pulled over say youre visting for a few weeks

Dont drive like a fool and youll be Ok. Youll want a front plate if poss being as youre out of state they may leave you alone

Without an EGR or EO# HSR cant be legal
Anyone have more info on this for him?

I have never heard of a 25 yr old classic smog exemtion rule in ca.
Link?

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

I still am running an egr system with the HSR.

With knowing the right people.....If I was to move out that way, I don't know anyone. So I'd deffenetly have to meet people , make new connections and so no.

I do not drive like a a fool, but I do like to open up the throttle every once in a while, I do not street race or stuff like that. I've had too many tickets and learned my lesson.

My car Is loud, might start looking for a muffler that is more quiet.

Thank you for all the info so far. I am sure I will have more questions.

Is their a decent car sceen there? Are there any clubs? meets ? crusis?

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

You will have to add a catalytic converter for sure. And change the headers, as long tubes are definitely not legal.

Did you add an EGR to the Stealth Ram? It doesnt come with one but one member here added the TPIS Miniram EGR setup and passsed the test with it.

Yes, the car club scene is huge out here. We have two local clubs that you would be interested in. One covers all thirdgens, Socal Thirdgenners, and you can find their info at http://www.sc3g.org/ or on their Facebook site. The other focuses on TPI engines in all cars (which yours would still qualify), SoCal TPI, and their website is http://www.socaltpi.org/

You might be able to get away with keeping the Maryland plate on it, but if the same cop sees you regularly and pulls you over he'll get very suspicious. CA law says you have 10 days from the day you move in to get your car registered. If you get pulled over, it depends on the cop. He has the authority to impound your car right there, or he could let you off with a warning and a fix-it ticket.

I'm not aware of any historical designation either. The only thing I know of is any car that is 1975 or older doesnt have to be inspected. Obviously our cars dont fit that criteria.

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

You can apply for a historical vehicle plate they have to approve

Cant be daily driven..pretty much for shows museum parades getting gas etc.
Sure they cant tell where youre going all the time but still. Car may be too new for that .

Jobs...depends what youre looking for. Lots of people to compete with so give it plenty of time.

Like Kevin said HUGE car culture out here....and fine women on every corner literally. Eyes open wallet shut .LOL

Doesnt really help us, to be considered a historic car, it has to be 35 years old. Just make it legal for the smog inspection, then do whatever with it. When it comes time to smog again, switch back to legal stuff...

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

If you have a loud exhaust, maybe going to and from work might not be a problem.
I have a lousy loud idle going on now, but its obviously something needing fixing not a deliberately loud exhaust, and cops leave me alone.
But if you hang out where cruisers do- like the one time when I got stopped it was in a fancy beach neighborhood, a lookout point that actually has signs about excess noise.
(Back then it was $10 ticket and now its like $80.)
Or the one time I was stopped for having no front plate was by an aiprort by a rookie during 9/11.
You just learn to avoid troublesome areas.
Also helps not to have tinted windows...

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

Historical plates are 25+

HSR is illegal in Cali. You can have the EGR yet if the tech actually knows what he is looking at, which isn't often, then you may find resistence. That intake is illegal here period even w/ EGR... Sadly...

Keep it registered from your home state until you cross that bridge needing to register it here. There are people here who can help when the time comes.

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

Go to post #99 This is the link to the form

Just above, it begins being discussed.

It exists as I know 2 kats who have this. It's not a common thing. And it shouldn't be lol, otherwise Cali will put a stop to this also

Re: might have opportunity to move to LA

Post #99 has the link. I stated if you go above that reference point you'll see the beginnings of the discussion and a link to another site for reference of the topic.

All you would have to change are the headers currently. You have the EGR for your HSR. The chances that a tech knows what he is looking for is probably 5% or lower... If you unfortunately hit 5%er, then go to another place.

Either way, keep it registered M.D. Worry about the rest if/when the need ever occurs...

The rest of the above info is simply options/ways to continue to drive your car.
