my third gen is an 82 camaro which the previous owner converted to a 89 IROC convertible, I then got the car as a freebie but as you can imagine the car was in a horendous condition from sitting so long in the florida climate. I then put it back together (bargain basement) and swapped out the 84 cc 305 out for a mild 383 stroker, carbed motor that I had in my truck. I am still using the 84 T5 tranny with a new clutch kit I bought from fort wayne clutch (2400 lbs pressure plate) and the rear end is from the 89 IROC donor car that was used for the conversion with 3.42 posi. I have never dynoed the stroker but I am guesstimating around 320 hp. anyways I know that the tranny is weak and can not take sudden load, like a stout launch but non the less I woild like to make it hook a little better without spending a fortune. the tires I am running now are Falken 245/50/16 all around. what tire do you guys recomend for the rear to at least make this thing hook a little better?

well i use road hugger gts there cheap and good.but u wont hook to well no matter what. u have a lot of ft.lbs . exp 1987 350 tpi full flow-masters 52mm tb headers nitto tires and he burns em everytime the pedel goes down.

he said use road huggers but then i got lost. id say some et streets or hoosiers would make you hook nicely well for a few runs anyway

The best tires for street racing are Nitto they hook and book. But there downfall is that they gotta wear rating of like 60 so there only 12000 mile tires but like bubble gum when ya heat em up!
or just buy some low pro m/t's='s mickey thompsons expensive at **** though like 200 a piece the nittos you can pick up for like 250 to 300 for 2 good bargin for peformance.

Well if the tranny is weak I really wouldnt suggest getting a set of sticky tires. A hard launch like drag radials or slicks are intended for will most likely take out your tranny if its on its last leg. Not to mention you have to do a burn out to heat em up which isnt exactly easy on a transmission.

my stock trans and rear have withstood about 15 passes now launching at 5k rpm with M/T et drags. they hook like hell. they are 26-10-15.

I got fulda extremos and on my stock L98 with 2800 stall on street they hook alright but gotta walk it to gain traction. But once at the track that is prepared and sticky and heated up, they hook well. tread rating like 180 so not to bad. Handles good though. Dont know about the 383 though.

BFG's kick Nitto's *** all over the place when it comes to drag radials. The Nitto's are decent tires, but I'll never go back after having run the BFG's. As far as a regular radial tire that hooks pretty well, I've had extremely good luck with Pep Boys Futuras in the past. Not to mention, they last forever. I've been mid 12's on them and have a friend who's been high 11's on them.

I really hate my nitto tires. I bought them when they where still 100.00 each so it was just like picking up reg. tires. they kinda help some but, well not like you would think. it's like a reg. tire with a hair more bite. not worth what they want now. I thing I will go with the hoosier or a M/T . it costs a bit more but, hook like a mini slick

hey Teal91rs it depends on what futura tires you get. My brother has the futura ultra-z tires on his 91 z28 and he can hood a 2.04 (best) 60''. i have the futura super sport tires and best is a 2.23 60''. he did a little burnout, i did a nice burn out and also small burnouts to see how they do and it was differnt each run. so i think if you have the futura super sport or other brand other then the ultra-z's then theres your problem.

now if you go to your local pepboys they might not have much of the ultra-z left in stock since they have been replaced with the Ventus II tires. im not sure how they run since theres only like 2 small sizes for 15'' rims and a bunch of 16'' and 17'' and 18'' rim size tires in that brand. how do i know ive worked for that stupid company for the past over 2 yrs and counting.

my brothers best run was a 14.1 at 95 or 96 mph withthe 2.04 60'', my best run is a 15.3 at 90.13 mph with a 2.23 60''

Running those Fulda Extremos put me 1.945 60' with only adjustable shocks, and eibach springs. 2.77gearing and the tires were worn pretty well. 2800 stall helps too, but launch was fairly hard so tires stuck well. Couldnt complain, 109 each at NTB.

REVLIMIT

You could always tune your suspension a little different to get more traction instead of buying new tires. Though I guess that would cost a little more money.

I have 245/50r/16 Yokohama S306 tires. They hook like velcro for me. My firebird is mostly stock. 305 TPI with t-5.

revlimit, how would u tune your suspension to make it hook better! i dont notice any difference when i tried to tune mine, ksue i would always spin, so whatever i adjsuted, it would jsut spin i have rellocatiobn brakcets, and i dont notice any difference! so isjtu set it back to stock, i have only gotten a tiny bit of wheel hop once. thats it! and my car is lowered
what else should i do to tune it?
