I saw an article about the Michelin "Tweels" in the local newspaper, sounds really interesting. It will probably be a long time until anything like those come into production, though. I don't even want to think about the price!

Makes sense when you see them on the Bobcat. No flats, cuts, or punctures, and a he!! of a lot lighter than foam-filled tires.
That shot of the Audi diggin in to that corner makes me a little nervous though....

i can see they use for off road low speed use. but on a car how would you keep them clean? imagine a chunk of mud in one of the spoke what a vibration that would be.

and yes ugly....

Car: I plan on polishing a turdgen
From looking at how the... spokes inside of the tire (not the rim) seem to deflect at the bottom of the tire under load, it seems like its a tension based thing.

The rim 'hangs' from the top of the tweel.

Weird. lol.

About getting stuff stuck inside of the tweel, you could always just seal up the lateral edges of it (what theyd probably do for a production model instead of as it is now, to show off the insides of it ) to keep stuff out.

One thing I'm curious about is how it would handle extreme torsional stress.... the inner members from the outside of the tweel to the rim seem to only show strength in tension, so it would just strech out like a spiral and launch off, right? Would that cause issues when it winds up like that?

All in all this seems like a good idea, a tire revolution to go with the Coates Rotary Valve idea.

This is off-topic to this forum, but I'll post it anyway. Its a REALLY good idea! Gets rid of camshafts, springs, and poppet valves!

Isn't it strange that tire technology hasn't been able to keep up with all the technology riding on it? It's about time! It seems like tires should be in the same category as 8-track tapes or phones with cords.
