open diff to posi?

I have a 89 Camaro RS with an open diff with 3.42s. What posi unit would I need to look for to make the rear posi besides buying an axel out of a IROC or TA. I'd like to keep my gears.

Re: open diff to posi?

Re: open diff to posi?

I thought that you could change to posi but keep the gears...I don't know where I got that idea. I would like to keep the 3.42 gear ratio so that I don't have to mess with the speedo cable. Otherwise what is the axel size and such so that I knwow what I would have to buy.

Re: open diff to posi?

You can change the non posi carrier with with a posi carrier and be done. NO problems. your 3.42 car now has a posi. You don't have to change gears.

Cheers!!

^exactly

what you're looking for is a posi carrier to be installed, that is all. totally do-able

Re: open diff to posi?

well you could also use a locker that replaces the spider gears. If you use another carrier you have to put new bearings on (at last you should) the you hav to shim it right including using the proper tools to get it within a few .001". I've done it and it's kinda hard, plus the spider gears will probably blow up later anyway (if you drive hard like me). eliminate the weak point in my opinion. or you could just get another rear end from the junkyard that already has a posi and just change the fluid and don't drive like a road racer.

Re: open diff to posi?

I think what he is talking about is what series gears does he have? It could be series II or III It's hard to tell with out looking.Could be either one with 3.42 gears. If I had to bet I would put my money on them being series III. Also 89 was a change over year between the 26 and the 28 spline axles. I think the 2.73 got the 26 spline the rest got the better 28 spline axles.

Re: open diff to posi?

I would need all that sort of info to find out the right carrier that I would need. Really this would be a rearend rebuild with new bearings and such. There is something in my rearend making this clunking/popping sound with side to side movement.

A rear end rebuild is not something to just jump into if you have never done one before. It takes skill and knowledge and the proper tools. The popping / clunking sound with side to side movement is most likely a loose brake shoe. Check the hold down pin and spring on the shoe. Or maybe a bad wheel bearing. Also carefully inspect your panhard rod.

i wouldn't touch the gears. I know that in the rearend you want the gears centered perfectly or you mess then up bad.. I wouldn't even know where to begin to do the gears. I could do the bearings. My dad has experience doing bearing so I can get his help.

Still does anyone know splines, size of the axel, etc so that I can get the right posi unit, I would like to buy a used one. Its only going on a V6 so I'm not really worried about blowing out the rear.

Unfortunately, you car was built in the "changeover" period, so the only way to tell what you need is to pull apart what you already have and look.

Ok thanks. So type 26 as in 26 spline? I believe that the rear is a 9 bolt...

Then just buy a whole rear unit with the posi, the gears, and the brakes you want. Then swap out the whole thing in one day.
