Re: coilover question

Judging by your wheel choice drag racing isn't your main priority with this car.....so I'm going to suggest you look towards using weight jacks instead of coil overs. The only thing you gain with coil overs vs. the stock spring location is adjustability and a small amount of weight savings. The downsides are that you give up wheel room, and put a huge amount of force through the shock towers and they were never designed to take this much force.

You'll gain all the adjustability of the coil overs with the weight jacks without all the downsides.

Re: coilover question

how exactly to weight jacks install I have hears of them but never actually seen them installed on anything. I might end up at the track once but this will be a street car. Once the big block goes in I would get down the track once and then have to install a legal cage. I am installing an 8 point but it won't be legal because I am leaving the rear cross bar out.

and with it sitting at ride height. Im prolly going to drop it a little bit more tho. I need to get the K-member in first tho.

I am running Spohns pro drag kit with Zo6 17x9.5 rims with 275/40/17 and have about the same clearance as Kat but I have no pictures at this time.

Re: coilover question

I like it myself. Even though it is a little over kill with coilovers I like them better than the weight jacks. are you using Koni's Kat? how far is the adjuster on the sleeve in your ride height pic? aslo are you swapping to a tubular k member? which one if so? I am more than likely keeping the stock k member but I am going to send it to Ed Quay to have it modded for more header and oil pan clearence.

*** nevermind I didn't think about the adjuster pic you posted first when I asked how low it is. ***

If you lower it more snap a pic for me I want it lower than what you have it. Do you have any ground clearence problems at all how it is now?

Re: coilover question

after looking at the price on the ground control weight jacks I would rather go with the Spohn coilovers anyway there isn't much difference and the Spohn kit comes with more.

Re: coilover question

I'm not real sure what you mean by "comes with more", but weight jacks are fairly simple and there is NO performance advantage to using coil overs....so they aren't "overkill" as Jstolts suggested. They are just two different ways of doing the same thing. Like I said coil overs put all the spring force into the shock towers and they were never designed for these forces, you are going to get alot of movement.

If you aren't afraid of a welder and doing a little fabricating you can get a set of weight jacks from a circle track supplier for less than $50 a pair. You'll just have to fab up a way to seat them in the top of spring pocket. I just cut off the coil locater tabs and made a flat plate to fit in the pocket. I just tacked this plate in place and enlarged the hole at the top of the spring pocket for the adjuster to stick through.

Now I can use stock spring cut to the desired spring rate and adjust my ride height with the weight jack.....super cheap and just as good as coil overs if not better.

Re: coilover question

I never said your way was a bad way but I like th elook of coilovers more and I will be reinforcing the strut towers when I put them on. thinking about doing something like this when I get around to stripping the car completely for roll cage and a long list of other stuff. I will be doing it similar but I am keeping my heater though so it will be a little more challenging.

Sorry that it took me a few days to get back. I forgot about the post. lol

Yep Im using koni red's. I wanna upgrade to the yellows or the VariStruts for the hell of it.

The adjuster is about 1.5" up fromt he bottom of the sleeve.

For the k-member, of course I have the Spohn Coil over version of it ready to be installed. I should have done it the past few days here since it was sooo nice out, but I just decided to enjoy the car instead.

Not a prob on snapping a pic when it gets lowered more

The ground clearance problems arent bad at all. Just the front airdam scrapes a little bit driveways, speed bumps and the DS loop hits speed bumps once in while. Other than that, I haven't had any real problems with it being lowered.
