KYB GR-2 Shocks on stock springs.

The suspension on my 92 RS with the 305 is bone stock, and worn out pretty bad. I'm pretty sure my rear passenger shock is blown as well. I'm not wanting to do anything radical with this car, right now it has to be my DD. So I'm in the process of fixing everything, and cleaning the car up replacing parts interior and exterior. So I have been reading up a lot on the suspension side of the car. Looks like everybody is worried about handling in these cars. That is not a concern of mine, for my town has pretty bad roads and on the stock ride height it's hard enough not hitting things. So I'm going to stay on the stock ride height, and upgrade to better than OEM shocks. I've played with KYB GR-2 shocks on my Cavalier in the past and I liked them. But they are different for every car...

I'm wondering how many people use these on their cars with stock suspension? I know other things are worn out on my suspension such as bushings, and I know I need to replace my tie rods and what not. That will be replaced with OEM hopefully while I'm installing the new struts. But if I can get an answer on how well the GR-2 shocks perform on the stock springs that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Re: KYB GR-2 Shocks on stock springs.

many people have used them as a good stock replacement part without issues. I had them on my RS a few years back and was happy. I look forward to using them again when I start putting together my suspension on the TA, but I'm going to be running drop springs and founder performance mounts, so its not entirely apples to oranges

Re: KYB GR-2 Shocks on stock springs.

I have KYB GR-2's up front, and Gas-A-Just in back.

I find them VERY harsh. Sure, there is very little body roll, but the car never quite feels like its getting into the corner, it feels like its riding on TOP of the turn.

Compared to a stock blown/worn shock, I'd take the KYB's any day of the week. But compared to a better shock like the Bilstein and Koni's its no comparison; but then again, neither is the price.

Yeah, it's hard to beat the KYB's for $177 for all four sides... For the price, I think I'll go ahead and pick them up.

The GR2's should fit the bill just fine. Be sure to give everything else a good look over when you replace them.

How many miles? How tight is the steering?

Over 200k, and I know the front suspension could use a little work. I have plans to replace a lot of things all at once. Just have to gather everything up first.

I didn't find any GR-2 for the Camaro on that site, only the Monroe shocks.

The link in included should take you right to the items available for 82-92 F bodies. I will include it again in case it got messed up. I have never ordered from them but need shocks and a suspension rebuild for my son's car so I need to get busy and get some parts. Its starting to get nice here soon.

Re: KYB GR-2 Shocks on stock springs.

Ok, I was able to find them by doing a specific search. Thanks again, wow their prices are cheap... I remember GR-2 struts for my cavalier being over $300, granted that was 6 years ago as well...

Re: KYB GR-2 Shocks on stock springs.

I've got one more balljoint to change, then i'm done replacing the front suspension. Been a small work in progress over the last couple years.

They're like puzzle pieces, every one you can change will tighten the car up.

My GR2s have about 4 yrs on them IIRC, they seem like they're holding up ok.

Yeah, I'm not trying to perform on a track like a vette, but better tighter handling is always a major plus. I'll just replace the worn out parts with OEM or upgrade if I can afford it.

I installed the KYB's last winter, along with new wheel bearings. We only drove the car about 1500 miles since then, but have been very pleased with the ride/handling since then, I would do it again if I had to. Good luck! Randy

They'll work. But the lowered car will wear the struts out sooner. Its just the way of things when the strut isn't operating at its usual length.

The only solution to that is drop spindles. However, good luck finding them. I think only 1 or 2 companies make them, and they are expensive. 3x the price of the KYB shocks alone.

If you are on a budget the KYB's will work fine. They are not the best, but they do work better than any you will find in Sears, or another "shop". Their OE replacements are horrible.

I'll be there all weekend April 29th-May 1st. MFBA is renting the track out.

The GTA is getting ported TB, ported intake, Ported heads, cam, and a T56 swap very shortly. Hopefully it will be dyno tuned by then cause otherwise I'll just be in my G6 which is fun to rock at RA too. As long as it has better brake pads.

I had the GR-2s on my Cavalier with a 1.6" drop and had no problems for the 2 years I ran that setup. But with the Camaros being completely different and a heavier car, who knows how they will fair.
