timing

ok I unplugged the EST so that I could check my base timing. My car was set at 8* BTDC. I hooked up the EST and the timeing was just way off; moreover, it moved even farther left of the timing marks. As a matter of fact it doesnt even line up anywhere close to the timing marks. Could this explain why my car is running like crap? MY car recently just started stumbling and running like crap throught the entire rpm range. I just replaced my ignition wires last week with msd wires. They're not laying on any headers. The cap and rotor are about 3-4 months old (accel cap and rotor). I sprayed carb cleaner along the base of the tbi. It looks like that is sealed tight. I just cant solve my stumbling problem. The O2 sensor was replaced last week too. injectors look like they are spraying fine. They look like the spray even. I noticed in low rpm ranges it backfires. In higher rpm ranges the problem will sometimes go away for a couple of seconds. The spark plugs are as old as the cap and rotor. SO to me it seems my problem lies with the timing. I work two jobs so i really dont have time to play with it. HELP. PLEASE!? I'm at work now! AGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

Car: yy wife, crazy.
Engine: 350, Vortecs, 650DP
Transmission: TH-350
Axle/Gears: 8.5", 3.42
If you're getting backfires, then you're running lean. Check the spray pattern on the.......

Wait. First let me say that your base timing will skyrocket after you hook up the EST. It's the 'puter's way of the acting like vacuum advance in the olden days. So 'NO'... it's not causing your car to run bad.

OK.

1. Check the spray pattern of the injectors while the engine is running. If they look OK (even and the same as each other), then....

2. Use a ohmeter to check the resistance of each injector. Each one should read around 14 ohms, = or - .5 ohms.

3. Next change the fuel filter. It's probably the culprit, but it's free to check the first two things I listed, and those two should be done anyway. Kinda like checking your oil.

4. Last but not least, check the fuel pump relay. Actually just replace it. It's like $10-12.

If none of those help, then I hate to say it's probably the fuel pump. Major PITA to get at. And costly to. I'd recommend getting that done at a local shop. That way they can mess with the gas all over the place along with the hazards that go with it.

Good luck,
AJ

BTW, I just noticed.... This is my 1320th post!!!! That's the same amount of feet in the 1/4 mile, for those who don't know.

1. Tested the resistance on the injectors. The meter read 1.5
2. might just buy a tbi from holley rather than replace the injectors
3. The fuel filter is less than 4 months old. I know so because I changed it.
4. If it is the fuel pump I might buy an aftermarket one and let a shop put it in.
5.I'll put money on the injectors being the bastards of my life. I'm not about to spend 80-90 each for the injectors.
6. Fuel pump relay will probably be the next thing in the to do list.
7.Do you think the timing chain or the TPS sensor could be the culprit?
Thanks in advance:hail:

fuel pump realy just made the car start smoother and faster. I'm going to do a compression test this weekend and I might swap out the fuel injectors

replaced my injector gasket and the car is running smooth again. I also did a compression check. Engine is running great! Thanks for the help though:lala:
