Car: 1992 Camaro RS
Engine: 355
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.73:1
Grab a tin can, put some rocks in it, shake
That's about as close as I can think of.
It's not a tick, it's not a knock, it just sounds like a bunch of "ping"'s and usually occurs under heavy load (3/4 throttle or more). (FYI, PING = Pre-Ignition)

You will know when you hear it, trust me. It is not a pretty sound.

Car: 88 Camaro SC
Engine: SFI'd 350
Transmission: TKO 500
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
ping sounds just like the name implies. Light ping will literally sound like a metallic 'ping' thats actally a shock wave traveling tyhrough the engine from colliding flame fronts. If you listen closely, sometimes on a hot day in traffic with regular in the tank, you might be able to hear an occasional ping when you go to accelerate.

What causes it... how do you avoid it, or get rid of it?

Too much timing, overheating, too much compression. Most likely if you have it the timing is too high. Just back it down until it doesn't ping anymore.
