Newbie here with distributor conversion ?'s

Well, I have managed to all but get the TBI system from a 1990 Caprice cop car (ECM 1228746) installed in my Jeep (AMC 360 engine). I know where ALL of the wires go now thanks to some good advice from another forum on this board...good stuff here.
Like I said, I have a 1980 Jeep CJ7 with an AMC 360 in it. I originally had a Holley ProJection system on it. After going through 3 control boxes, I decided to make the switch to a GM system for reliability. With all of pretty much wired up, I need to know something about the ignition controls...I hope someone here can help me.
There was once a page on customefis.com about converting a non-computer distributor (non-GM) to GM computer control. I remember something about removing the mechanical advance flyweights and something else about wiring the mag pickup to a GM control module. Problem is, I can't remember which of the two wires from my mag pickup go to which pins on the module. The distributor I am using is a Ford MotorCrap distributor with three wires coming out of it. One is a distributor ground (BLK), and the mag pickup wires are orange (POS) and purple/blk (NEG). Where do I wire these to the module? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

So is customefis.com even around anymore? Or does he just charge for any info now?

Anyway, on the regular small cap GM HEI computor controlled distributor the pickup coil connections are two open pins toward the inner side of the module. The outer side of the module has two enclosed connectors (2 pin & 4 pin).

A GM module is marked with I believe P & N for pos & neg pickup coil connections. Cast into the molded body.

You hit it on the head. I tried to get a little help about a year ago and he kept plugging for a $25 registration fee to get into his archives. He gave little tidbits here and there, but never anything specific enough to be of any real use. I managed to figure out what I needed on my own.
The 4-pin connector goes to the computer and the 2-pin connector goes to the coil. I'll be getting a harness to install my Accel 300+ ignition controller and coil in about a week.

Have you thought about using a DUI distributor for mopar engines? Also how are you going to adapt a knock sensor into the system, if you plan to use one that is?

The DAVIS crossed my mind, but I don't think it is set up to work with an AMC block. The distributor I have can be converted, I just had to remember how to do it.
The knock sensor is already installed in the block. I managed to wrestle one of the block drain plugs out with a 9/16" socket and a large breaker bar. The block drain was the only place on the engine that made sense to put it. I knew the thread was the same because I tested it on another AMC V8 block I had laying around. It is on the driver's side of the block toward the rear in between #5 and #7 cylinders. I can't see any reason why that wouldn't work.

Duraspark conversion


You should hook the purple to the "P" and the org to the "N"
the black is just tied to grd.

Close, but not quite. My distributor is pretty much converted with the exception of the removal of the mech advance stuff. I have a DuraSpark (DuraCrap) distributor on my AMC engine. It has the pickup and all the other stuff already there. All I need is to wire the pickup to the GM ignition module. Now that I know where the wires go, I may be in business. The local parts house has the parts (module, etc) in stock. They say the module runs $36 off the shelf from Standard Ignition. Does that sound about right to you guys or am I getting hosed?

Got the mech advance stuff done today. I removed the weights and lockwired the thing so that it can't move from zero. That was easy. Now, the last part is to get it stabbed back in the engine and start prepping to fire the engine off for the first time. I still need to get the fuel pump plumbed...it won't start without fuel.

Oh yeah...I got the module for about $20 at another parts house. Made by Standard Ignition. The pickup terminals were marked just right...P and N.
