Anyone have exp. with the LO5?

Particularly the 9C1 Caprices? Or even dyno numbers / track times for the third gens with the LO5.

My 1989 Caprice 9C1 with the 5.7L TBI LO5 has proven to be very reliable and relatively fast in stock form. After seeing some threads dealing with stock third gens that have LO3's, I'm wondering if the first mods I should do would be the same?

Would my LO5 Caprice be able to keep up with a LO3 third gen in the quarter mile? I've searched frequently, but after all, this is a site for Third Gens, not boxy Caprices.

I'm aware of a few advantages of the Police Caprice, such as the higher rate injectors and oil cooler, but anyone else have some knowledge to share? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm a young dude with a thirst for knowledge!

I have the L05. I'm not sure if its the same thing that in your caprice but close enough. It's not as fast as i'd like it to be, but my motor is SUPER restricted as I just havent had the time to do any basic bolt ons. Once I ditch these L03 manifolds and stock exhaust and air cleaner I'm sure it will be a bit better. Its GREAT for daily driving. Falls on its face in the high RPMs but I have plenty of fun with the torque, bombing around the city under 40mph. I have some things done, like BBC injectors and custom PROM tune which I am constantly tweaking.

People around here tell me that with an opened up intake, exhaust, posi/gears, and dialed-in tune I should be able to do 13s on the stock long block (peanut cam and swirlie heads). I dont know how valid this is, thats just what they say...I've never been to the track.

I can tell you that my with my stock longblock, bolt on L05 my 5,500 lbs Van would run with the LG4/L03 cars down before the end of the 1/8 and pull a commanding lead by the 1/4 mile.

Brick Caprice 9C1 with LO5 (1989-1990) and 3.42 will run mid 16s in the quarter. Low 16s with muffler and CAI.

Whale Caprice 9C1 with LO5 (1991-1993) and 3.42 will run mid to low 16s in similar weather. With simple muffler and CAI mods, they'll run high 15s.

The 1991-1993 model is heavier due to the greenhouse glass and the more aero body, but the extra weight is offset by the slightly more powerful engine (195 or 205 fwhp) vs 190 in the 1989-1990 brick. The trap speed and top speeds are also higher for 1991-1993 than 1989-1990.

Yes. In order

1. exhaust
2. cold air feed to the air cleaner (DIY dual snorkle with ducted feeds)

After that you would need 1.6 rockers, or a cam swap, and most certainly ECM work the more modified the engine.

Similarly equipped, no. The 3rdgens are 600-800 lbs lighter, so they are roughly a second faster in the quarter.

You'll find a lot more info on the forums dealing with the Impala SS for 1994-1996 because it was derived from the copcar Caprice. Also look at the sales brochures at

http://www.9c1.com/brochures/index.html

and looking here to start with:

http://impalassforum.com/noncgi/ulti...;f=33;t=009021

as it deals with mods to TBI Bcars. HTH.
EDIT: dyno numbers bone stock would be 170 rwhp and around 270 ftlbs in a 1992-1993 model (factory rating is 205 hp at the flywheel) on a chassis dyno. A 1989-1990 model will be around 10 hp less, again bone stock and in good running condition.

The 9c1 L05's came with a better camshaft than the civie ones. Still not that great but with 1.6 rockers it makes it decent. I also believe the exhaust crossover pipe is bigger in diameter than the civie but that may have been a post 1991 improvement, not sure if the eariler cars had it or not.

Thanks everyone. As of now the car has 200,000+ miles on it and shows no signs of quiting. Though a few weeks ago the muffler was close to falling off, so I quick replaced it with a $20 Thrush Glasspack. Talk about loud!

I loved our 9C1 90' Caprice. It was bullet proof and before the age crept on it (245k) it would scoot. The torque and the gearing just seemed to work well together.

We finally sent it away because the emissions equipment went **** up. At that point it wasn't worth spending the money on it to keep it going.

A 383 Caprice project keeps looming in my head, but with the new Camaro coming out soon, one project car is enough for now.

Do what some have suggested on here, and you'll have a fun car.
