werid problems - 88 tbi
alright guys ill start with the weridest one frist. i have the accel coil(came with the car) and it kills the ESC module every 6 months and my guy at napa told me this was the last time he was gonna replace it for free. so i get the accel HEI module(called GM to get the dizzy number) and the frist one didint work(i put the stock on in and it fired right off) and then i get the second one, didnt work either(stock one fires right off). any ideas? jegs is sending me their brand.
next
when the car runs for bout 2 mins and if i hold the revs constant(cant drive it, not insured) it sounds like its skipping and slowing down. it has a rebuilt dizzy, stock module in it for now, accel cap/rotor, moroso wires and im gonna throw in a set of plugs, a/c delcos. think this will take care of that problem? any input is welcomed. tried to search but couldnt get what i wanted

i honestly dont know what is wrong with your setup but seeing how no one else has posted i will offer a couple ideas.
first idea-when grounds are bad, crazzy A$$ things happen in wierd places-maybe check and make sure your grounds are up to the task of supplying that extra power needed by the after market coil
2nd idea- you have the worst luck at buying parts, you realize that every part you order is a dud-thus while crying yourself to sleep one night you decide, in a fit of sorrow, to burn your F-body and take up basket weaving
like i said-just some ideas

I'd go to a salvage yard, find a similar car with a 305tbi, and take off all ign. parts and swap them to yours...the stock stuff is bound to get it running good enough to sell....if timmed and tuned right, also check the fuses

i would cept all the f-bodies are either v6, a 4cylinder one or 4th gens. i think its just the plugs. had a car come into my work today with simliar problem, 140K on the OEM plugs.

1) more then likey could have the wrong distrubtor as its a Napa Rebuilt. but it can wait
2) its not in the ignition, its a surging almost. only does it costant throttle. could be in the fuel or the TPS/CTS gonna check them out soon.
i over looked the TPS and CTS but iATN.net pointed me the right way

I was having the same exact problem. The car eats ignition modules every four to six months. I was on my third one today and the car left me stranded, again. Same symptoms. With the exception of a momentary sumble on tip in, it ran very well for awhile. Week or two before and the car would just start running like crap. Starts gradually but eventually today I had a hell of a time starting it and it kept threatening to stall and kept misfiring and immediatly died and wouldnt restart as soon as I turned the engine off. Each and every time, the module failed just as I said above. I traced this back to the ignition coil. The insulation between the primary and secondary coils had failed and was allowing the 35,000V or so of spark energy to arc directly to the primary coil and into the cars electric system. It was very, very faint, but visible in complete darkness. Needless to say, the module was probably doing its job by failing to insulate the rest of the electric system from the faulty coil.
----------
Also, Ive said this before, but the entire distributer base, module contacts, distributer clamp, and the intake area around the dist. need to be spotlessly clean (no grease, dirt, or corrosion) when you re-install the dist. The module makes its ground through the base, clamp, and intake. If these are dirty, then the module wont trigger properly as there isnt a good path to ground. Lastly, make sure you actually use REAL heatsink grease, and not that silicone dielectric junk. The preferred paste is the one containing silver. This can be purchased from some radioshacks and computer stores like Comp-USA.

Re: werid problems - 88 tbi
I also had a mysterious module failing problem, every time I replaced the module it would be good for a few miles or a few hundred miles. It go so bad I would keep 2 spares with me to change out. Ended up being the ground screw for the module inside the dissy. The screw that holds the condensor doubles as a ground path, every time I would replace the module I would wiggle this loose connection and reestablish contact and it would run for a while untill the contact would corrode again. Might be worth a check.

Re: werid problems - 88 tbi
im thinking my car has parts from different years in there. my TBI unit seems to be a 89 as every parts store list a adjustable side plug for my TPS but i need a non adjustable straight plug TPS which was offer in 89 on the LO3 i guess. im gonna give GM a call, get a dizzy number for an 89, then call napa and get the dizzy number from them. and see where it leads me

Only the 89+ cars had the newer TPS's. The 88's have the old school straight plug ones.
