Re: smog delete question

This topic is asked 5 or more times a week, and I post this same info in every one.

Is this a street vehicle? Its a violation of FEDERAL laws to remove, disable, tamper with, or otherwise alter the function of your stock emissions control devices on a street vehicle, regardless of your state or local laws. Besides, that stuff hardly costs you any power on a stock vehicle such as yours. The only benefit is to clean up the engine bay, as it is in the way. Those of us out here in SoCal have 400 HP engines, run 12 second ET's, get 25+ miles per gallon, and pass the tough CA smog check cleaner than the averages. Get back to me when you can do that, and then we'll talk about whether it costs you any power or not.

Re: smog delete question

I guess i need to get back with you now as I have a 500 hp 383 carbed that passes emissions now..... I know the laws in regards to this matter.... hell putting high flo cats tech is a violation of this too...but many do it and no one really cars... I have someone who needs the system for their car and i am not ready for my big swap out yet as i still need a few things and this would give me a little more cash for those parts... I dont really drive the car now so I'm good but want to ensure if I needed to i could without computer related issues.... I'm not worried about power as this car has none like you pointed out and when you hit 600 rwhp and pass CA emissions get back to me as that is my goal with another engine my friend and i are playing with....

Re: smog delete question

What isnt a violation of some federal or state law, rule, regulation, executive order or code somewhere? Paying taxes...

I used 1/2" diameter by 20 tpi x 3/4" long bolts to plug the air tube holes in the manifold. 1/2" long bolts would stick out less but I couldnt find any.

Re: smog delete question

A carb'ed '68 Nova that doesnt have to pass CA emissions doesnt count. We're talking thirdgens and thirdgen engines, here. Yet, putting on an aftermarket catalytic converter is legal, as the companies are not allowed to sell them unless they're certified as a legal replacement.
If you get 600 RWHP in a '92 Camaro that is emissions legal and passes CA smog two years in a row, I will pay you 1,000 dollars.

Re: smog delete question

Partially true. In illinois laws, it is unlawful to replace a fully functioning catalytic converter. I can't find it in the laws right now, and I don't feel like spending much time on it, since it's almost 3am.

I also found this one funny:

(625 ILCS 5/12‑602)
(from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.

yup... an after market muffler is a no go for federal law.... but we can buy them and use them but it states we cant... that is why factory does not put the in...

Kevin my 383 motor came out of a 3rd gen....they did put 350's in them once....its not hard to make any motor pass CA emissions if you know what you are doing.... Ca emissions cant be tha great as in many of the cities you can barely see the sky half the time yet other cities like philly and NY have a little less hassle and you can see just fine... The smog set up on my car does nothing but mask the emissions by pumping air in to cover the fact its a smog beast...I could rig that system onto any motor to pass if i really wanted... its like the new "Pig ****" system dodge is coming out with for theie cummins motor....

Re: smog delete question

The reason L.A., CA has so much smog is because its a valley. The mountains around the city trap the air as the wind pushes from west to east. Places like Philly or New York have no mountains to trap the smog. Also, we have a million more (poor) people with a million more (clunker) cars, which adds to the problem.
The air around here is tons better now than it was 30 years ago, that is a fact.
