Faster warm up

Car: 91 Camaro RS
Engine: 5.0L TBI (ebl inside)
Transmission: T-5

Faster warm up

Basically, I would like to the car to warm up faster.

The temperature gauge works, verified on ebl. I don't believe the thermostat is defective, because eventually it reaches minimum operation temperature (180 degrees F).

Some of the modifications, I have done do effect the pace at which the car warms up. I have a hybrid tpi/ Cadillac intake (with no thermac prevision) and no longer have an ac condenser in front of the radiator.

I am moderately confident the only modifications that I should pursue are ebl code related. I expect that I can change timing and fuel tables to warm the engine up faster, but I have not done enough research to find the specific changes necessary. Anyone have some insight on this?

YOu could put in a 195stat for winter. You may also be able to modify the cold timing spark table and add in a little bit of timing to get things a little hotter when the engine is cold. How long does it take to warm up now?? Are you running a clutch fan or electric??

Replace that exhaust flange spacer with a working efe valve. That will block exhaust flow on the passenger side and cause engine to warm up alot quicker ... well, providing you have it on your car.

Look at the 'SA - Coolant Comp Spark Advance' table. In the stock calibration the area of 32 - 68 C, 40 - 30 KPa VAC is low. This pulls timing to dump heat into the engine and exhaust. You may be able to re-work this table to better suit your needs.

Hopefully you haven't drilled a bunch of holes in the thermostat (seems a lot of folks recommend that). Doing so bypasses a lot of water. Only need one 1/16" - 3/32" hole to bleed air.

Also check that the fan isn't coming on at too low a temperature.

It is an un-drilled thermostat. I think I understand my problem now. Before I had added timing thinking it would warm up faster, but instead I should have removed timing.

Electric fan is coming on at the prescribed 210 degrees F.

Here is a datalog from today. Obviously I need to work on the OL fueling tables as the engine roams a bit when cool. And for some reason the motor dies as I'm pulling into my driveway at 9:04.
