TBI and Ethanol

TBI and Ethanol

Posting this here because obviously my engine is TBI and some of you TBI guys are freakin' crazy engineers.

Check it out:

Micro Fueler

The story I just saw on TV mentions there is a computer module you can (have to) attach to your ECM in order for an engine to burn pure ethanol. What exactly would that module be doing to the ECM? Does it retard the spark since the fuel combusts at a lower temperature (or something like that)?

I'd be open for a debate on the merits of this "machine" for general use and the economics of it. I'm fully expecting to hear that as soon as this hits, the price/demand of sugar would skyrocket making it an unreasonable to do this at home...

It is friggen cool that people are thinking outside of the box though. Anything to keep my F on the road is my interest here.

to run ethonol you need alot more fuel about 35% because the air fuel ratio is about 9 to 1 instead of 14.7 to 1.. the piggy back module increases the injector pulse width. however multecs are not alcohol complient. they don't tell you that.. and the stock injector in a 305 is too small you have to go up 35% in injector size.. also these old cars have no compliancy to alcohol..

You are WRONG, they started putting 10% ethanol in fuel YEARS ago. The stock rochester TBI injectors are used in BRAZIL for E100 powered vehicles. I've been running E85 in my stock 2006 Dodge Ram 1500, NON- flexfuel engine for the past 15K miles with no ill effect. My brother has been running it in his TBI S10. I have also been running it in my TPI powered G20 van.

sorry you are right.. i thought i was in the TPI section.. The rochester TBI injector is not a multec that is used in 89-93 gm products.. that injector cannot handle alcohol.. There is even service bulitens released by ac delco on this.. But it only pertains to TPI,, not TBI whitch is almost bullit proof. sorry for the confusion.

You are right about the TPI Multecs, that is why I have 5.3 Flex Fuel injctors in my 305.
