anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

been thinking about doing a swap to 1.6 rockers. Any advice on the install. Are they a direct swap or do I need to look into valve springs and push rod length?? All pointers are appreciated!!

Re: anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

Only thing you'll need other than the rockers(self-aligning) is tall valve covers the stock ones want work.

Thanks, yeah... I also wondered if clearance would be an issue. Do you think that the ratio rockers are worth the "Power per Dollar"??

Re: anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

I did the rockers and underdrive pullies at the same time. I thought it was worth it. How do you like your 3.42s I'mfixing to do the swap I got the kit gears and all. Have you ran in the 1/4 what rpm are you at when your driving 70-75 thanks. If you dont have headers get them and delete your catalytic convertor if you can, do the open element mod if not also all that makes a big difference.

Re: anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

The 3.42's are nice. Not as much seat of the pants improvement as I would have thought but a real good performance streetable gear. I actually picked the 3.42's based on what I calculated for the 70mph RPM. I think I had calculated out like 2200 or 2300 in overdrive and it's just above 2000. Probably like 2100 or 2200, and I'm still getting around 22 to 24 mpg on the highway. Believe it or not I actually haven't taken the car down the 1/4 mile strip yet so I have no idea what it'll run. The previous owner of the car claimed it ran a 14.7 but he didn't have anything done to the car except the shift kit, hypertech chip, underdrive pulleys and an open element filter. So I have to call "Bull ****" on that one.

I swapped out my underdrive pulleys for stock ones. I had a problem with the alternator charging the battery consistantly so I swapped em out. I had the alternator rebuilt and haven't put the pulleys back on yet. You don't experience that do you? I know my car seemed like it would want to die at a red light cuz the alternator wouldn't keep up with the battery so that's why I switched.

Re: anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

I don't have any trouble with the alt. but I got a 160 amp I use to be into systems when I killed the factory one I upgraded. Oh if your wanting to do a cam swap in the future the 1.6s limit you to low lift cams I wanted to get the comp 08-500-8 cam for my car but w the 1.6s my lift will be 510/520 if the stock heads had screw in studs it wouldn't matter but they don't. I got my rockers off ebay for like 165 I wouldnt spend alot of money but for that price they were definately worth it I'd do 2 mods at the same time so you get a good sotp feel. Did you go from 2.73s- 3.42s?

Hey 2592RS, I'm using the 1.6 but I really didn't notice any difference...if you have them in conjunction with some other mods, then it might be worth it...I wouldn't remove your cat/converter as someone suggested, but you could replce it with a new one.

Naa, it really doesn't sound too good...why put out extra polutants and make the exhaust sound too loud and stupid??? Just replace the cat with a new one and it will sound good and be Legal and less polution.

the man who really knows his stuff on this is vipershark11.
he has been helping me setting up a zz4 cam on my 305 but im running 601 heads to get more compression.
im getting all the push rods, springs, retainers with the cam.
im not building a rod, just want to play with my 305.
i got the heads up to watch the pushrod length, among other things.

I live in Lousiana, huge 4x4s are everywhere, everyone pretty much runs straights and yes it sounds good mine does anyways, cats are expensive and a waste of money if you don't have to have em, but you have your opinion and I have mine.

Well, I guess I was wrong...I thought it was a Federal Law to have the Cat for environmental reasons.

Re: anyone running 1.6 ratio rockers??

yeah i went from 2.73s to 3.42s but you better get a posi first. You can't use the stock open diff with 3.42s anyway since the 3.42 ratio requires a 3 series carrier and our stock 2.73s have a 2 series. But definitely a good mod for the price as long as you can get a posi for cheap. I happened to find a brand new Eaton Detroit TruTrac for 150 bucks on ebay (normally around 700). I lucked out and it's the best thing i've bought for the car. And yeah, I have to run a Cat and all that other smog stuff here in Ohio. I live in one of the few remaining counties here that still runs e-check.
Yeah, I wasn't planning on doing a cam swap on this motor. I've also heard that even if you can get away with the extra lift from the 1.6 rockers you don't want to run em with a higher lift cam. Apparently they run better with the stocker peanut cam.
