Smoking at cyl #8 and won't pass inspection. PLZZZZ Help!
I recently bought an 88 camaro LO3 Base 305 TBI and the inspection ran up. so i went to get it inspected and it had a missfire at # 8 cylinder when they put a new plug in the missfire went away but it smokes by that cylinder and they are trying to tell me i need a new motor but i think its just a gasket or something. but on the inspection report they suggest a new O2 sensor and a cat. so thats y the emissions arent all there. Please help and let me know what yall think
And the car runs and drives great. if the engine really needed to be replaced or rebuilt that bad it would run like sh*t. It doesn't realy smoke that much by the cylinder, you can just barely see it. No leaks or anything. Oil is oil and coolant is coolant, its not mixing. it just burns a little oil at startup but hey its a 305. they all do

your valve seals are bad or valve guides are bad. it smoked by the cylinder? like maybe the back of the valve cover gasket is leaking and dripping onto the manifold or something? if it has the original cat and o2 they probably could use a change. but if its the same shop that said you need an engine then id be hesitant to have them do any work for me.

I assume the #8 plug was oil fouled. This is generally caused by oil passing through the rings. This may mean th engine is worn out but it can also mean that the rings are just clogged with varnish and arent working properly. Rizlone oil treatment for 3 or 4 oil changes is a good cure for that.
I also gather that youre seeing smoke from the exterior of the engine, close to #8 on warm up. #8 probably hasnt been firing for a while. Oil and dust have been building up on the manifold at that cylinder. Now those deposits are being burned off since #8 is firing again. If the smoke continues after a few days, you may need to reseal the valve cover.
The O2 and cat recommended for emmissions compliance are another issue. Both may have been damaged by the engine burning oil. Hopefully the Rizlone will help this. But at any rate, if your engine wont pass the test without these parts, you will need to replace them. While I cant recommend them, Midas seems to have the lowest price on cats.

Yea, i'm gunna try a different place. me and my pop were talkin and the car don't hesitate, it easily does a burnout (i tried it because if the engine was blown it wouldn't do a burnout easily) and when i go to powerbrake it right before it goes to spin the tires it doesn't sputter or nothing. I'm just going to do a full tune up and have the O2 and Cat replaced and hope for the best. How do i change the fuel injector filters???
Thanks

I assume you mean the fuel filter. Its located under the car, just below the left rear seat. The injectors have individual screens. However these screens are only serviced as part of an injector bench cleaning or rebuild.
