89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

Ok im starting my project, just went to Napa and bought tons of parts. Right now, i need to drop my fuel tank, so i can flush it out, and ensure theres no sludge in it, due to it sitting for about 2 years... Is anyone able to give me some info/help on how to drop the damn thing without rippin apart my exhaust?

Any advice will be appreciated, i know theres a few threads about the same thing, but i will also have more questions down the line, as i get closer to getting this thing street worthy.
Thanks,
-Matt

EDIT:Sorry for the crappy phone pics...

Ur exhaust seems like its welded so u prolly dont have any other choice but cut the muffler off.

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

yup looks as though you will have to cut and re-weld when your done. last time I changed my muffler I went ahead and put a flange on the muffler to be able to unbolt it. (also good if I wanted to try different mufflers etc.)

Welding it back on is the problem... i can cut just fine, would anyone suggest cutting off the exhaust and then just getting one of those metal connectors with two clamps to put my exhaust back together?

oh and i went to NAPA to get an open element air cleaner, and the guy never even heard of one, they need to get people who actually know what there doing to work in a parts store... checked autozone and couldnt find one either... might have to order one online. any suggestions?

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

That should be fine. I plan to make mine to make it 100% removable.

As for the Open Element, My local Autozone had it in their ***** section. Its where they keep all the flashy things and other things like gaskets. I think they have just the Edelbrock version at mine. My local Oreillys had a Spectre Open Element that I liked, had the air filter top lid too, think it was $40. If they dont have it check out Summitracing.com or Jegs.com get one with a flat base to have good clearance and not rub on anything.

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

I would think you should unbolt your catback at the cat and pull it out if you want to drop the tank. You will also need to unbolt some of the suspension and drop the rear down to drop the tank fully. I did this when I did my fuel pump. Speaking of that you should replace your fuel pump with a higher flow one while your in there.

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

I just pulled the fuel filter off put a bucket underneath it and cranked it over. Each time you crank it(even for a second) the fuel pump comes on and spits out fuel for about 15-20 seconds. I did this until the tank was near empty.Got 3 gallons of water out of it. after new fuel and cranking for about 5 minutes it finally started. runs perfect now.I realize your trying to get sludge out so i'm not sure if this will help?

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

when i pulled the pump out, i saw no sludge and the gas was only about 6 months old. But now it cranks but DOESNT start. I replaced the spark plugs, fuel pump, oil, coolant, hoses, belt. Put injector cleaner in the gas, and it still doesnt start. Its really starting to **** me off! for some reason, the spark plugs they gave me are a little longer than the ones i had in it before. could that be the problem. i even tried spraying ether into the intake, and it will barely start to run and then dies. brand new battery too

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks everyone

**EDIT: I only cranked it for about 10-15 seconds, should i crank it for longer so the lines can fill with fuel? Im kinda new to all this, any help is appreciated**

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

Try swapping your fuel pump relay. After I did my fuel pump I had the same problem after all that work. Turned out to be the relay too. You could even pull one of your other relays and put it in place to test. There should be 3 of them on the firewall under the hood. One on passenger side and two on drivers at least in my 91. I forget which was for the fuel pump.

Re: 89 firebird 305 TBI Build/Help?

Ok, I got it to start, but it seemed like the injectors were just pouring out fuel. Also I could hear a slight knocking sound during idle, and it was idling kinda funny too. What could be the problem now?!?
