1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

Hi friends. well im not sure if this is the right board, but since it has a 305 tbi i figured it would be alright.

I picked this car up from a junkyard for 500 bux. too it home and jumpstarted it and it fired right up.

I have since done a complete msd and accel ignition upgrade, the open element filter, and running open slp headers while i wait for my custom pipe to arrive in the mail.

This weekend i put on the "new" fenders i got off an 84 berlinetta. I broke one of the side skirts in the process but i guess that gives me an excuse to get the aero style as my front chin spoiler is broken as well.

I have a 350 I am building to replace the 305, and I am attempting to get in to tuning. I am currently doing research as to everything i will need to get started at the best price.

This is a fun project, and being on an island in alaska makes for interesting ways to come up with parts.

Re: 1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

Well, since at least one person is interested I will give a little update. I have ripped out that big nasty a/c box and got my a/c delete pulley in the mail yesterday. I also received my front head light blackouts, front smoked turn signals, and smoked fender signals.

As for the 350 I'm building. There is no machine shop on the island... So I pulled the heads to inspect the cylinders. They are in pretty good shape and have been bored .030 over with flat top pistons. The pistons do not move around in the cylinder so that's a pretty good sign that the cylinders haven't been unacceptably worn since the previous "real" rebuild. All I can really do is clean up replace what is needed and regasket. I picked up a set of 64cc world sportsman II heads for 200 bucks.

That's about it for now. I need to rough sand the body, and paint the rest of the car to match the fenders. I also installed the Kroc hood. I'm just using automotive black primer, it looks good, is easy to touch up, and there's just something about a flat black primer car you hear coming from a half mile away.

Re: 1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

Well, I made some time today... that shouldve been spent on my schoolwork... to work on the slowmaro today. I have always been a fan of the flat black primer, super loud and ridiculously fast cars, so that is my aim here. i need to fix some panel gaps and finish sanding and painting, but i was just tired of looking at these parts sitting on my kitchen table. so i got my butt up and installed some.

i primed the front bumper so i could install the headlight blackouts, they need to be mounted more permanently and fitted better, but at least they are on for now and not on my table.

i installed the smoke side lenses, i have some smoked front turn signals, but i wasn't motivated enough to crawl under the car to install them so they will have to wait.

i also took out the a/c compressor and installed the delete pulley... i was not expecting for that compressor to be that heavy. i am not going to miss that literally dead weight in my engine compartment.

next up will most likely be getting rid of the heater control valve and smog pump.

here are some pics for those that are interested.

Re: 1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

Glad to see someone else who was willing to save a TBI and has a vision of what it can be, I always told my friends that motors can be swapped and better suspension can be bought, so as long as the sub frame isn't jacked up, and it's cheap, why not

Re: 1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

@Blue-i love this flat black primer as long as you cover everything evenly, and use the same spray pattern it lays down really nice. much much better than peeling clear coat and sun damaged paint. I am just trying to get it one color. i'll worry about dents and the like later on.

Well today i got rid of the now useless heater diverter valve. i also ditched the charcoal canister. i fixed a vacuum leak as well and the car is running much smoother now.

i got part of my y pipe set up in im still waiting on the other pieces for it.

ill try and get some pictures tomorrow.

Re: 1990 camaro rs junkyard resto mod

Well, I have been out of town for a while and havent done too much.

I "fixed" the rear pull down motor. By fixed i mean it is no longer functional so i manually pulled the motor down and inserted a bolt in a position that would latch the hatch and have it sit level with the quarter panels.

The car also started to die on me, i have suspected a fuel pump for a while... i ordered a stock replacement in tank pump.

i also ordered a starter for the 355 im building along with new/used valve springs, water pump, carb studs, a 700r4 carb throttle adapter... and some other stuff im sure...

I am going to try and get the 355 in and running in the next couple of weeks before my fall semester starts. 5 classes and 2 kids does not make for much time to work on cars.
