Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

I have a 92 rs with the 305 tbi and want a better exhaust system. Buddy of mine is re doing his 86 t/a and said I could have his stock exhaust system which is larger diameter pipes than my stock system if I wanted it. I would rather get headers and be done with it but no money and free exhaust sound like a winner to me for now. My only question is will his tpi exhaust manifolds fit on my tbi heads with no problems?

theyll bolt up because its still a small block chevy, but if remember right the earlier tuned ports have more stuff going into the manifold like emesions junk

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

All my air tubes and smog pump are removed so I'll just remove them from the new ones and call it a day. Little more work but hey, if it bolts right up then that's all I care about. Especially since its free!!!

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

will they fit?
sure

is it worth it?

not worth your time, if you are going to rip out your stock manifolds you might as well be putting in some headers(even some of the cheap ones would be better than stock manifolds)

don't waste your time swapping manifolds

im not sure if all manifolds were the same across the board(in my eyes they were)

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

Just make sure that the manifolds are well over 2.00" outlet diameter. I just did the swap after reading all the threads. LH is 2.12 and RH is 2.12 on mine.

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

I understand its not much of a gain on performance or anything, but my current set up was pieced together from a bunch of miscellaneous exhaust pipes and looks like a total hack job under there. Plus some of the welds look busted. And I'd be getting an entire system from manifolds all the way to the muffler. I think it's worth it if it fits. Thanks for all the input.

Oh! BTW I don't know if you can see it but the big RH manifold exits on a slightly different angle that the small one. I think you also need the good TPI/L69 Y-Pipe like I did.

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

There several big stock y-pipe replacements out there. MAC looks good. I found a mint stock one from Frank's Pontiac, bead blasted it, hit the VHT colour of your choice....

Yeah I'm getting both manifolds, y pipe, and everything else that originally came with his L69. I think I'm going to sand blast the manifolds like yours thirdchance. Look great! Where did you get the plugs for the air tubes? The only ones I've found are the 1/4 NPT pipe plugs which work, but they have a square head instead of the hex head type which looks cleaner IMO.

if your just looking to get a working system on the car then i guess that works for you, so the short answer would be yes, go for it! lol

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

Yeah that's the goal at this point. The inside of the car smells like exhaust so until I can save some money up for a 350 swap and headers then this will do for now. Thanks everyone for all the info and input. Love this forum!!!

Re: Will tpi exhaust manifolds fit my tbi heads

I am fairly certain the 86 TPI cars had the smaller LG4 manifolds and Y pipe on them as they only had a 190 HP rating. Changing the manifolds only is going to be a waste of time on the TBI. Get a good single 3" exhaust system fabricated from the manifold flanges out with a good flowmaster scavenger Y and a highflow cat.

Agree with Fast355. Get a 3" intermediate pipe, Hi-Flow Cat and mufflers of your choice. If you go with the Flowmaster you don't have to put up with the sagging bazooka s/s tailpipes. With a few cuts with a zip saw and a file you can tuck them up under in the stock location.....

The '86 TPI had the bigger exhaust. It's 190 horsepower rating is a result of switching to an LG4 cam in order to meet emissions.

Where did you get those tips?

Hey chazman: If you use the Flowmaster 3" catback you get big fat monogrammed tip s/s pipes about 4" past the bumper!!!! I just trimmed them to the same shape as the factory tailpipes and tucked them up in the stock location.
