Need advice for next summer's build up... high 12's/daily driver

Alright, my sig. is exactly what I will be running when summer rolls around next year with the exception of 3.42 gears and some rear end strenghing mods. I would like to get it to high 12's and it will still be my daily driver. The engine is a stock-headed, stock-cammed 285hp 350 8.5:1 CR crate from GMPP a year ago. I have already counted on replacing both the cam and the heads since they are the bottleneck of my engine now. I do not think that alone will get me to my goal so I was wondering if the Vortech Centrifugal style blower would be a good investment. I want to go with this becouse I'd like to leave my bottom end alone and also need a smooth idle.

So my questions are:
1. Would you go with the blower?
2. Which Cam and Heads would you go with?
3. Any other ideas?

Thanks for your time,
Matt

Vortec heads w/ a CompCams Extreme Engery cam will do the trick..something around the XE268 would work well for you..from my recollection those crate motors come with 72cc chamber heads so you'd ge a little bit of more compression with the vortecs. get it tuned and tweaked with a solid suspension and you can hit high 12's on all motor. from my experience the carbed vortec motors/XE cam combos love short gears so you might want to think about some 3.73's..maybe some 4.10's

Search for my car's specs in the Reader's Rides section on this sight.
If your motor has dished pistons then shave the heads
to at or near 58cc to get your compression ratio up to as close to 10:1 as you can.

There are many ways to skin a cat and this is a good one.

Vortecs look to be the way to go. I like the price too. It leaves enought money left over to have them port matched. Did you have any machining done to yours?

Also, what do you have done to your rear and suspension?

Thanks,
Matt

the ports on the vortecs are just about perfect compared to the ports on the performer rpm manifold so no matching was required. you'll need new springs, however. my suspension is pretty basic and very stock consisting of boxed control arms, sfc's and some poly bushings tranny, torque arm, etc. some lca relocation brackets will make a big difference. my rear is a 10 bolt with a auburn posi,28 spline superior axles, and richmond 4.10's.properly tuned these motors make decent power and like to break parts! i see you already have a th350 transmission. good move

Yes, I had it bullet-proofed about a year ago. So far it's broke a tranny mount, a torque arm bracket, and cracked my x-member. I'm having gears put in after Chrismas as well as some of the "How to build a better 10-bolt" tech article additions. Then later the SLP heavy duty diff. Hopefully that will hold up to the new cam and heads. I'm having all of that done, I've been working on this car for two-three months and need to take a break. Hopefully I'll be ready to dig back in when summer comes around .

I know SDPC and Edelbrock make vortec style intakes, does anyone else that you know of?

Vortec heads need the valve springs replaced with better ones.
They also need the valve guide boss shortened to make room for high lift. .450''+ or more. Optional is screwin studs and guideplates. The intake port and port match is pretty good out of the box. The exhaust port responds well to a simple pocket port and polish.

My suspension is stock V6 with a AIRLIFT air bag in the right rear spring. I use sticky M/T ET streets for strip use and MT Sportsman Pros for normal street cruising. I recomend geting a polyurathane
trans mount.
