Got to do a NY state inspection..ne1 who can help in here..

I have to get the maro to pass. it passed over 2 years ago. Last year i drove without a sticker but now i have to get one. so how do i go about making sure it passes the first time? I know it passed 2 years ago but for some reason i think it is going to fail emissons. So what things to do/tricks can help me pass emissions?

Well let's start with an obvious clue....

Why do you think it might fail?

NY is not very strict on emissions. I have gotten my car passed at 3 different stations and I have an 81'Z(first year of the computer controls-originally had full emissions(cats, egr, charcoal canister, smog pump)) with not 1 thing that could even be considered smog equipment. Try to find a guy who has an older car too and just shoot the **** a little with him, just be a nice guy and I think you will be fine.

My conversation with the mechanic went like this:
"This thing originally had cats and a smog pump didn't it?"
"Yep"
"And it doesn't now?"
"Yep"
"Well it did when I passed it"
"Yep"

I think the gases are gonna be to high. The last time i ran over 2 years ago the nox(sp?) was like .10 from failing. so i was scared then.

I was also thinking about b.s. them but then till try to tell me to start changing stuff. and i don't want to deal. I was thinking maybe offering 20$.

would you guys pass a car for 20$?

what could i do to keep the gasses down?

I wouldn't go in to a shop I didn't know and throw a $20 down as an offer to slide me through...first off, ya don't know how the guy would react to any kind of a bribe..and second...$20 doesn't buy much around here anymore. More than likely, you just insulted and pissed him off. If the car passed 2 years ago, why don't you think it'll pass now? If you haven't made any major mods....and just kind of assume things get worse with time...they don't really get all that much worse for no real reason. And if its just that the cars running a little rougher cause you haven't kept the maintenance up real well...why don't you try and throw a fresh set of plugs and an air cleaner in? If you haven't made any changes to the car..that's about all that might have deteriorated in the last couple of years. I'd be willing to bet that the car would pass. If you're still really nervous and don't mind taking a drive west a little bit, I can recommend a shop to you (not that he'll pass ya if you're way over the limit...and $20 ain't gonna get him to change his mind...) but he's honest and decent and won't jerk you around.

I dont know where in NY state you're from, but most of us dont have to deal with emmisions testing at all. (unless your in NYC?) You MUST, however, have a catalytic converter in the exhaust.
Thats the first thing most techs will do, lift the car - look for a cat.
The fines are heavy, and its not worth losing our jobs.

Only one front wheel is REQUIRED to be removed (to check for brakes, but most will check all 4 wheels).

The vehicle cannot be leaking brake, or power steering fluid... must have more than 2/32nds of tire tread at the point of most wear on all tires. Any and all lights that the vehicle cam equipped with from the factory (turn signal, brake, headlight,TAG LIGHT!,reverse...)
must function. Horn must work, seat belts must function...

Most everything else is at the discression of the inspector. Make the effort to get the simple stuff (above) fixed and youll pass just fine.

Mike Z....exit 61 on the LIE. And Hellraiser...no emissions testing in Buffalo??!!!? I thought that was statewide... I'm on LI, not NYC, and we've been doing it here for years. But ya know...and it's been told to me by an inspector...its amazing how much cleaner they burn when ya blow compressed air down the intake during the test

If your car is in good running shape, it might just be something simple that's raising the smog.

For instance, a dirty air filter can raise the CO count! Simple reason; dirty air filter doesn't let enough air in to create CO2, so you get CO (carbon monoxide). I have a $7 k-mart air filter that I throw on just for emissions tests; then I take it off and the K&N goes back on.

One misfiring cylinder can throw out enough emissions for a bunch of cars! Unburnt fuel = HC right out the tailpipe. Give your ignition system a once-over... clean/regap the spark plugs. Check the resistance of all the wires to make sure none of them are way out of spec. Clean up the distributor cap & rotor of carbon tracking, and check the timing, set it to stock specs.

Do they run you on the dyno like they do in NJ? If so, check out your EGR valve; that's what keeps the NOx down. The catalytic convertor also keeps NOx down, as well as HC's, so it's possible that your '86's original catalytic convertor isn't doing as well as it could be - if the pellet bed hasn't broken into pieces yet!

Also, before I hit the test, I buy a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass" from Pep Boys, and follow the directions on the back. Seems to work, and hey, if it doesn't, it's only $7 I'm wasting.

dang, i'm glad we don't have emmisions testing down here in georgia. my camaro would be fine but my last car was a '83 oldsmobile with the exhaust cut off about half way, and every kind of fluid it used to run was at a constant drip onto my driveway. ahhh, no emmisions tests to worry about, good ol' south......

Yea they do run it on a dyno.

TomP

Yea the cat is old but not from 86 but the pellets are broken.

What kind of K&N you got?

I can't remeber the size of mine but it fits over the carb.

But I would say around 14 in diameter and 5 in high..but does the k-mart sell a replacement filter like that?

also ill try that Guaranteed to pass stuff.

So i do run the tank full or empty?

Ill do that stuff and ill just see what it does.....if it fails then ill do a complete tune up and all that good stuff.

In NYC/LI there is an emissions test. They do run it on the dyno. You should change the O2 sensor, check the plugs, cap and rotor. Make sure the car is running well. If your cat is shot, it might be a problem. Make sure the car is warmed up, up to operating temp. Some recomend running dry gas, the alcohol "cleans up " the exhaust. Make sure you have fresh oil in the engine. I don't see why you wouldn't pass if your car is running well....

Yeah, the shops here (in general) are just too poor to buy the equipment for the enhanced emmisions testing. I really believe thats the only reason they wont require it here.

MikeZ28,

If you fail the test and then got to DeeMax's recommended shop to get passed, you might get that shop in trouble. You should probably just get with Deemax to start with.

You also have to make sure its ok to get your car tested an hour from home. In TX, I had my car tested about 25 minutes from home and found out the test didn't count. I'd gotten it tested in the wrong county. I was new there and didn't realize where the county line was.

And to ease your fears, if your car is running well it should pass easily. If it doesn't pass, a tune up will probably get it to pass.

I just remembered...a few years back, the 350 in my Blazer was pretty well shot...blowing oil past the rings and smoking like a chimney (had 180K miles on it, so I can't complain too much). I figured the thing could never pass emissions..but it did (don't know how...don't wanna know how ). You'd be surprised what can get by. Do all the obvious stuff (lights, signals, horn, etc)...tune the engine up as best you can...and you'll probably be fine.

Car goes on the road tommorrow so we will see what happens.
