Cost of getting a 350 Rebuilt?

Hey guys, I have been struggling with getting my old crappy 305 to start in my TA, but it needs more money and I am not throwing money at that POS motor. So I would really like to know how much it would cost for a rebuild of the 350 I have lying around. Here's what I have.

Bare block, good crank, good pistons, rods (1 or 2 may be slightly bent, piston wear was a little uneven).

Can anybody tell me approximately how much in parts and machine shop labor it would cost to:

Hone the cylinders, check the rods for straightness, check the heads and pistons for cracks, clean the block and heads, get new bearings/gaskets, and have everything professionally re-assembled.

I am just looking for a ballpark estimate. Also is there anything else that I am forgetting that is needed for a rebuild?

PS. The reason the engine was pulled was blown piston rings on #4 cylinder, so all the other parts I listed above "should" be reusalbe right?

Thanks for the help,
-Max

Rods are not "slightly bent". They are either straight or they're bent.

You could be looking at anywhere from $300 to $2000, depending upon the quality of the parts and the quality and extent of the machining. Your best bet would be to find out exactly what parts are usable (and you'll probably have to take them to a machine shop to be sure), and shop around for price & quality.

Asking and calling around in your area is the best way to find a good shop for the job. Ask people who have no stake in the shops (racers, for instance). If you call, be prepared to explain what you've got and what you're looking for. Some shops will talk you through it all, others won't have the patience (and the impatient ones may be the better ones to do the actual job).

Thanks for the help,

I think my rods "may" be bent. The wear patter on the piston skirts was a bit off center. Assuming the entire rotating assembly was good, would 300$ get me a rehone, a cleaning, and new bearings/freeze plugs?

BTW I am not looking for a race engine rebuild, the engine is only putting out about 300HP so a minimalist rebuild would probably work.

Thanks,
-Max
