how do i get the total timing down?
I've been trying to get the curve right on the distributer all morning, and i can't seem to get the total down no matter what combination of springs i use.
As of right now, the timing is set at 12* initial, and 44* total. I only want like 36*.
How can i accomplish this?
Eric

Disconnect the vacuum advance, and check it again.
I have never heard of a dist with 36° of mechanical advance. (Not to say that it couldn't happen, but...) However, 24° of mechanical, plus 12° of vacuum, is just about perfect for most performance-built engines.

Sounds like maybe you could actually use a bit more mechanical then, not less. Most of the time, SBCs run best with about 36° "total" static + mechanical, before vacuum advance is added. You have 12° of vacuum advance which is a good starting point in tuning for best cruise manners and gas mileage.
