Look at the post directly below this one, about loss of low-end torque.

the 416 castings from the lg4/l69 cars a very populare choice ( i have a set i am just finishing up, going to go on with a wieand single plane intake manifold.

i think that lb9 heads would be nother good choice (sorry i don't have the casting number)

alot of people also have alot of good luck with vortecs, they can be found fairly cheap on e-bay and other places.

Since you have a 92 it would be better to get 081 305 castings. The bolt angles and whatnot are designed for post-86 roller engines.

Did you get out 17 head bolts per side? 7 long ones and 2 medium ones under the valve cover, and 8 short ones under the exhaust manifold?

If the short ones are still in there, it's going to be tough to pull those heads.

Here are snips of "info" I've collected to far:
Hope it helps, I am unsure as to how accurate it is.

These heads are cast iron
They fit on GM 305 1987-1992
They have a "Center Bolt" patten
I am told that they come off TPI-powered LG4 cars.
They may also have been on LB9 and L69 engines (1987 Monte Carlo?).

I see references to flat or roller tappets, mechanical or electric fuel pump and center bolt valve covers.

As I understand it, 416 castings are similar heads with a perimiter bolt pattern (pre-87?)
There is no such thing as a "TPI powered LG4." LG4s were ALL carbed. L69s, also carbed, ended in 1986 (and a 1986 L69 is VERY rare). LB9s are TPI 305s.

Yes, your info on 416s is correct.

The casting number is under the valve covers, stamped onto the top of the head. It is the last three numbers from the eight number stamping that identifies the heads. Once you have that number go here to identify it: http://www.mortec.com/
