Do you have a 2 wire connector that plugs into the side of alternator? Or is this 3 wires, a red and two brown/white wires?
In the plug, the red wire does connet to the starter through a fusable link (factory) this is the regulator sense wire, so that the regulator has a reference signal. The brown/white wires connect to ignition controlled sources, varies from car to car it seems. Usually one goes to a light on the dash, while the other could be run in parallel to a relay connection, such as cooling fan relay. Best to get a haynes or other service manual and check the diagrams.
