Neutral Drop

Ok i have one question when u neutral drop in an auto camaro does it mess up the tranny alot or at all?? If u don't know the term neutral drop its when u rev it up in neutral and shift it to drive and then u get some serious smoke... I prefer power braking it but is a neutral drop bad for your car??

Not only is it very hard on the transmission, but the sudden jolt on all of the driveline components is also terrible. The driveshaft, universal joints, rear axles...and the tires are not designed to be "snapped" into motion like that.

While lots of tire smoke may look "cool," all it does is show people that you have no traction. When the tire spins, you're throwing away all your power.

that will modify your drivetrain to a broken condition.........then you can repair to a better than stock condition.

Back in High School my "friend" borrow my car well on his way he was in front of another friends house and did what you mentioned. My drive shaft flew out of the car about 50 feet. Total damage. Towing, both u joints and motor mounts $200 (This is 1984 price). And with out car for a week. So if that sounds cool then do it.

Well somewhat on the same topic, how bad is it to hold your auto in gear to shift at higher rpm's? I dont do it often, but when i want to get going fast, i put it in first and manually shift up to 3rd, holding it until its gets closer to redline then a normal shift. Im going to be getting a shiftkit soon so i hope to not have to do that, but im just wondering how bad that is for the tranny

Well when I get my camaro on the road finally. (about a week) I'm not gonna spin tires like so many other stupid teenagers at my school. tires are worth way to much. Not to mention all the other parts you burn out.

Car: Trans AM
Engine: 305 TBI
Transmission: 5spd
I used to drive a 1990 pontiac firefly. For fun (keep in mind I was 17 at the time), I used to do neutral drops. But as you can imagine, the 3 cylinder didnt spin the tires very much, so I used to put it in reverse, and get up to about 10Km/h backwards, then drop it into drive (without letting of the gas). The car would sit there, while the front would hop. It was really funny till I blew the tranny (cost me $2000 to get fixed).
On another note, Im 24 now, and I still like to spin the tires. Not very much, I know how much tires cost, but every now and again. Plus I dont really spin them on a launch, more like to go around corners sideways.

I go behind farm and fleet or any other tire change dump and take the old tires, you can usually find a nice set 255/50R16s that are in ok condition and have em mounted for 25 buck, Then I go out and burn the **** out of them guilt free

good idea, i think i might have to try that...especially since i have a freind who works at a tire shop. Noone answered my question about holding it in gear. Is it bad for the tranny to manually shift it?

Josh,

don't worry I am going to have fun. Of course I am. This is my first car. I'm just going to keep how much I spin out to a minimum. I have to watch my costs. I'm still in high school so puting in a new tranny is not going to be too easy. No prob though.

Everyone, keep having fun!

best thing to do is try to redline the motor first .about 30 seconds(tip:use both feet) then rip it into low 1 remember dont let off the gas its wicked cool.then when the car dies get out and look at all the neat parts on the ground sweet.
good luck have fun, oh wait thats how to drive any mustang sorry!

well i think most of us have had a fair amount of fun with this post. when i first read it i thought it was marginally tech related so i left it. looks like the other moderators did too, now i'm going to lock it. it would be better for post of this nature and all other non tech to go to www.nethirdgen.org thanks
