how would you do a compression test when the engine is on the engine stand, SAFELY?

cmon i wanna get the compression check done tonight, but when i hook up the battery to the starter, nothing happens. can someone give me a diagram on which receptricales get grounded on on the starter, and which get the positve? there looks like there is four recpricles on the back of the starter, however, i only remember taking wires off of two.

well i just got the reply, but i just closed up the garage for the night. o well, do it tomorrow. anywho, i kinda get the diagram, but have a couple questions:

1)what is the purple wire and is it needed.

2)the engine is not in the car, so i can ground the battery to the engine itself, correct.

3)i wish i had a picture of the starter because i dont think they are labeled on my starter(aftermarket stock replacement exide starter) so where would i hook the + wire to?

if i dont figure it out i think ill just get my dad out there tommorrow.

you should be able to connect hot wire directly to starter and ground to the engine to make starter spin. why are you doing a compression test now? leak down test might be better indicationj of the condition of the engine.

y i meant leak down test. anywho, what terminals do i ground out, and what terminals do i put the hot on? for some reason when i touch the hot with the terminal that was hot hot when i unbolted it, and same with ground, nothing happens. the battery is good though. man this is pissing me off.

you should be able to put the hot to the big stud on the starter and ground anywhere on the engine and make the starter spin

You still need 12v to the solenoid...i/e pos cable to the large lug on the starter, neg to block.

Now jump from positive lug on starter, to "ign" on solenoid, use a 10ga wire.
