what is TPS?

what is TPS?
i just got a trouble code 24 and it recommended checking the TPS. i would like to know what a TPS is, where is it located and what does it do? i have a 350 with a q-jet.

after further review of the manual i have discovered that TPS is throttle position sensor. my car idles at 2000 rpms and wont calm down. how do i go about checkin the TPS and IAC?

Throttle Position Sensor. It tells the ECM what the driver thinks the car should be doing at the moment.
On a computerized Q-Jet it's located in the front left corner of the fuel bowl, next to the accelerator pump; if you look at your carb closely, you'll see a small green rod sticking out of the top of the air horn touching the pump lever; that's the TPS actuator.
(edit) On a carb car the ECM does not control the idle speed; either your choke is stuck, or you have a massive vacuum leak, or your secondary blades are stuck cracked open, or it's just plain misadjusted.

well heres the next problem, i am scheduled to drive back home tomarrow (saturday). if i cant re-adjust this TPS sensor by then, is it ok to drive roughly 200 miles to home? what kind of problems can i excpect?
another ?, i saw the green lever, how do i adjust it, should i just play with it until the idle calms down. im gonna wait for my dad to come home before i apptempt to do anything, like around 7pm pacific time.

You could drive it forever and not hurt anything.
The idle speed adjustment is a screw on the side of the carb that the throttle lever rests against. However, if your car just suddenly started doing this, it's unlikely that the screw is the culprit since they don't usually just jump off into some other zone by themselves. More than likely your idle speed problem is one of the other things I mentioned.
To adjust the TPS you have to remove a plug from the carb, which is very hard to do without disassembling the carb. That sort of thing is best done during a rebuild.
I always replace the TPS as part of a CC Q-Jet rebuild; they don't cost a whole lot, go bad alot, and are a pain in the drain. Odds are, if your TPS has worn out, your carb needs rebuilt anyway.

Engine: 355 (fastburn heads, LT4 HOT cam)
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt, 3.27
Not to be rude, but you need to read the replies when you ask a question.
The ecm does not control the idle on a carbureted (LG4 or L69) engine in a camaro. Adjusting the TPS will not change the idle signifcantly.
It does sound like the choke is not opening though. After it is warmed up for about 10 or so minutes, the choke plate should be completely vertical. If not, i'd be checking the voltage to the choke heater. It should be 12 volts when the engine is running.
