New engine needed?!?!?...help!

I've already posted a "wanted" ad.....but heres the situation: Last Sun. night, my car died an hour and a half away from home on the side of the highway while with some friends comming back from a business trip. What happened, is that we had JUST filled the gas tank 5 minutes before halfway with some 94 juice, because we saw some smoke comming from the hood, popped it open, and found it to be comming from the breather filter. So with that in mind, I figured since we were out in the middle of bumblef*ck with no auto store around at all, I'd just fill it with some 94octane & that would probablly result in whatever sediment was burning, to be forced out since 94 is cleaner than the 87octane it had before filling it with the 94.

So we check the oil & trans fluids & both seem to be fine, along with the engine temp at around 150. We then pull out of the driveway, drive about 1/4mile to the highway....and about 1/4mile onto the highway, the girl driving tells me that it's decelerating.....as I then proceed to watch her slowly floor the gas while the speed decreases. We pull it over, pop the hood, and notice a little smoke again. So we have the driver try to start the car. It turns over after 3 seconds or so, and then we hear this horid metal to metal grinding as it starts....and we see more smoke comming from the breather filter. We take the breather filter out, wipe it off as much as possible with a t-shirt, and then replace it and have the driver try to start it agian & the same thing happens; metal to metal grinding, and smoke from the breather filter area.

We then use a cell phone to call a friend of the other guy with us, who happens to be a mechanic. He tells me after describing the above situation that it sounds like a blown piston head. Then we call the father of one of the two girls with us, who is also a mechanic....tell him the same thing, and HE TOO tells me it sounds like a blown piston head.

The nextday, after we're all home and all that good crap....I have my fiancee's brother take me all the way back to my car to see if we can jump it on a prayer . To make it short, his truck ends up sliding into the mud on the shoulder of the highway, someone else comes to help, and after seeing two trucks off the side of the road into mud...some passerby calls the state police and reports it as an accident. The state police come, the guy who came to help tow my fiancee's brother out leaves, and the state trooper calls two tow trucks for us. We get my car to the nearest auto service center(which is ironicly built into the side of the station where we filled my car with gas the day before!) since it won't start and looks like the alternator might need to be replaced( after I just put a new one in, in Sept!). The service center is closed,so i leave my info & spare set of keys(to have the head mechanic work on it in the morning), and go home after paying the tow co. $123.50!

BUT, here's where I'm calling the mechanic's(from the service center) BS: After it taking 3 calls to ask if he had faxed me the work order since I live so far out of town, he tells me on Wed. night over the phone that it looks like my car will need a new engine, and that it is low on oil and that I should have checked it more ofter and that the trans. fluid is old and that I should have checked that as well. However, this sounds like some sh*t since I JUST put a new alt. in, in Sept when I bought the car...had all the engine gaskets re-sealed in Oct....and had a total trans. flush & oil change done in early Nov...and because he told me that the engine was seized up and that it was'nt in fact a blown piston head or two.

My rents on the east coast are P.O'd b/c of all the money they've put into this car for me out here in Michigan, My fiancee is P.O'd b/c it's my daily drive & the middle of the holidays. And I'm more then royally P.O'd b/c it's MY BABY we're talking about here...and because it's my daily drive....the middle of the holidays, and b/c my rent's really dont want to put anymore money into my car for me.
As it stands,I've got an offer on a 87 305 TPI from a Z28, for below 700.00. ANY suggestions, ideas, help, comments?!?!?
Thx!-greg

What he said.

I'm sure those top quality mechanics at that gas station in the middle of nowhere would love nothing better than to charge you for replacing a motor. The way you described stuff could mean a million things... Unless massive amounts of smoke is billowing out of your breather hole there is nothing wrong... Car stops accelerating while you press the gas? That sounds like a transmission problem ...uhh, I dont know.

Re: 88IROC

Thanks for the info. It may well be the trans & I'm more than positive that they're(the mechanics in bumblefock) are just trying to milk me for all i'm worth. In addition to that being said, I called them today for an engine price est. and they dont have one yet, so then I asked if I could have them install one if I had one available(hinting that I didn't want to get ripped off by them) to which they said yes.

Blown piston head?

are you sure they didn't say blown CYLINDER HEAD?

because you might have a blown cylinder head GASKET, but thats a $20 part, and a couple hours of labor.

....

It seems like what I'll probably both have to do and end up doing, is having it either towed to a friends fathers' shop near me or having my fiancee's godfather who lives about 20 minutes away from where my car is now, come out and take a look at it since he's a GM mechanic.
I definitely need to get some exact answers none the less though from the shop!
