The darkside with TPI ??
I may be building a new project.
I will NEVER get rid of the Camaro, but I'm tinkering with the idea of building a FORD (I know, YUCK), but maybe with a thirdgen TPI small block / ECM / harness from a speed density 1992 Z-28.
Here's a pic of her hiney.
What do you guys think?

I would go with a new ford mustag power train. Ford in a ford GM in a GM. You can use all the 5.0 lit stuff and mount it onto a 351 with a new chip and you are talking some killer hp. Not to mention the availiability of super chargers for that set up.

I love the GT500's, and the "Eleanor" look is definitely cool. They did a lot for it. Now i just have this urge to go watch Gone in 60 Seconds with the volume turned WAY up.

What about a ramjet 502 TPI fuel injected crate motor?
I'll try to post pics of the project car when I get them, hopefully this post wont be closed when I post the pics of her. She's in rough shape, but has potential.

When I go to my uncles house, I'll see what I got (all my parts are there). I may also have a set of 67-68 cougar taillights... if you're doing the Shelby tail conversion. And so the thread doesn't get locked, here's a picture of my Trans Am from last summer when I first got it back from getting painted (note stang in background looking lonely; I sold it about 2 weeks later )

I will be doing the complete Eleanor Shelby GT500E conversion.
If I use a complete 92 Z-28 TPI powertrain, where would I put the ECM? There is no room under the dash to put it. The only place I can think of right now is to put the ECM in the glove box.

Have you checked out the eBay Fast Foward Fastback? When I get another one, I'm going with a S/C 302.
As for the ecm, if this isn't going to be your everyday car, you could remove the heater box and bolt it to the firewall right there. But you're right, they are tight under the dash.
If you run into a prob or anything, just let me know. I could almost assemble one of those cars in my sleep. I know I had mine torn apart enough...

Hmm...... some good points, but I think maybe the glovebox would be a good place for the ECM. It would be easily accessible to change PROM chips when I go to tune it.

no offense mike, but why?
Your maro is bad ***, and it still not done......why waste money on a third car when you could get your rear, supercharger, wheels, ect.......
But if you were to fix up a stang, thats the year to do it, I've always liked fastbacks

Car: No more birdy
So you guys posted some rutang pics to remind us all how ugly they are huh? I had a 64 1/2, drove it once biggest POS I ever owned, sold it to this girls dad for more then any fNords worth and bought a 64 356 porsche which was worse.
Personally I think your better off finding parts that are original for anything that old. Resto rods look cool but arent worth squat when you get tired of them. A 351c 4bbl setup would do wonders for that bucket.

Ford tough with chevy stuff?
Well, a few years ago I saw this mustang LX in PHR? i think that said he was the fastest 5.0L mustang in the US, but it was with a 305 chevy...Street rodders have been doing this for years with ford coupe and F100 bodies, why not a Rustang, if that's what you like? I've always liked a lot of ford's styling, just not the engine options...why have 2 351s that a lot of parts are incompatible on? To me that means $$$ when rodding a Ford motor, that's what made me a chevy fan originally, even though everyone in my family drives fords (currently a total of 9).

I would trade my trans am in a heart beat for a 67-68 fastback stang...
And to the guy who said they're not worth anything once you get tired of them, take a look on eBay. I saw a 68 fastback that had a nice paintjob and a hopped up 351. Nothing special, no special rare options or anything. Sold for 16k.
Also, I had the opportunity to buy a 68 fastback in about the same shape of mikes new project. Was an original 390 4bbl car (which still had the original motor in it). Coulda got it for $1300 a few years back. Saw one on eBay a month ago in WORSE shape with same options LESS MOTOR go for $6400.
BTW Mike, if you decide to pass on it, let me know, k? I'd like a shot at it:hail:

Id hate to be the one who has to dig into that thing. Some cars at least make an attemp to make themselves apear in good shape. That thing is totally trashed. Id try to find something in as good shape as possible to start off with if your planning on a good quality resto...

That car is in awesome shape for it's age. If you knew Mustangs Like I know them and had looked at enough of them, it's always nice to start out with a project with no rot on the quarters and front lower corner of the doors. When I got my Mustang back in '96, it had no floor pans and no quarter panels.
Mike, if you don't already know, there is a shop called John's Mustang in Houston headed towards Katy that has good parts for cheap. I pretty much bought all my stuff from them.

Yea, been there! It's a nice shop.
Herb, I tried to call you on your cell phone, but was unable to get ahold of you. PM me your new number so I can call you after work today.
On a side note: My '91 Z will be completed before any work goes into the fastback. I'll have the 12-bolt, wheels, etc... on her before I buy any parts for the mustang.
For those who think there is no value in what I'm building: Look on Ebay, there are Mustang Eleanor fast-back's going for $90,000 - $125,000 !!!! I'm building a complete Eleanor replica out of that fastback, (if I can get it).
Jgolden314 - I'd like a ride in my car too! I haven't been able to drive it for a month due to working ALOT and bad weather. She is a blast to drive, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, being one of those "moderator-jerks", I have little choice. You suspected this would happen.
Frankly, I wouldn't TPI it either. I especially wouldn't mess with any 4.6 Romeo engine junk in it either. Why install half an engine? Find yourself an old Ford Y block and build a real engine - the kind the car was built around in the first place. There are plenty of REAL performance parts available for those engines. Then you'll have the torque you're suppsed to have between those spring towers and almost twice the displacement of a Romeo P.O.S.

Don't mean to sound like a smarta$$, but......Mike, if you got the money to fool with a 67 fastback restoration/eleanor conversion then you have the money to run something better than a TPI motor in it.
Motors/drivetrain I would consider (most to least)
LS6/LS1 w/T56. (Only non-ford drivetrain I would consider)
03&up 4.6 cobra motor w/T56
5.4 Lightning motor
Or, if you wanna go with the traditional route you could always piece together a clone Boss 302 motor with a single plane intake with multi-port efi and run it off of a speed density GM ECM. Compared to the cost of the new model motors above, you could build a really stout traditional motor.
Or you could do one with a 351 winsor and put some of AFR's bada$$ new heads on it. With a multi-port system it would be a helluva driver.
For suspension, check out Total Control Products. Their parts were used on the stunt Eleanors in the movie and by now they should have their rear trailing arm/watts link suspension kit done for the car. Matched with their other parts and the car would be worthy of any SCCA roadcourse.
Trust me.....I've had the same plan as you, I just have to finish my car and then do some adding on to the house first.
Just remember, you're not dealing with a cheap late model camaro or fox bodied mustang....it's a classic mustang and even if converted to an Eleanor clone, it's still gonna have some value and collectiblility IF DONE PROPERLY. Putting a different brand drivetrain in it will be a knock on the value of it.
Good Luck!

VAder - WELCOME BACK!! Long time, no see!
Yea, the powertrain is still up in the air. Hell, I still have to get the car first!!
It will be awhile till I have the money to build the powertrain. THere's gonna be a ton of body work to do before I can even think about a motor. But I'm just tossing idea's off of people to figure out something cool to put in it.
A buddy of mine suggested this:
357 Windsor (.030 over 351), 11:1 , 850 HP Holley double pumper carb, AFR 205 Windsor heads, Solid roller .600 /.610, 242/252 @ .050, 110 LSA, Victor Jr. air gap intake, Long-tube headers. etc...
The above should make close to 600 HP naturally aspirated.
