Last Q, can I bead-blast my l98 heads? what about valves..
I want to paint my heads while I'm rebuilding, it would be easy enough to bead blast them but would it damage them in any way? what about the valves?
btw, what size are l98 combustion chambers? what is comp with stock pistons? (I'm just full of questions tonight aren't I!!)

Bead blasting wouldn't hurt them in any way i can think of (off hand) as long as they're cast iron, aluminum would be another story. I'm assuming you're gonna have them hot tanked and replace the valve seals afterward though. They'll really need to be dipped cuz those frickin glass beads will get in every nook and cranny there, and you definatly don't want them coming out in the engine! You'd have to be careful around the valve seats too, unless your're also gonna have some type of seat work done afterward (3-angle or something)
I suppose you could tape off and seal up the "insides" with heavy plastic or something while you blast though, but again, if any glass beads slip by...
I think i'd just use oven cleaner (or paint stripper?) and re-spray them if you're not gonna re-work the heads.
