Anyone running a 327 in thier Thirdgen?
If so... what's your combo, how do you like it, what'll it do?
I have a 327 that's pretty nice, and I'll be using it to replace my 305 soon.
Mine isn't really built up at this stage, but it has a small retro roller cam, balanced crank, zero decked, and flattop hypereutectics. With the P&P 041 heads I have right now the CR is roughly 9.5:1. So the potential for add ons is there.
Later on I'd like to invest in a better set of heads... Vortecs, LT1s or AFRs.
I plan on staying in the 170 to 180cc range for the intake vol to keep the torque up, so that limits my head choices.
And when I do the head retrofit I plan on doing a cam swap as well.
My future intake system is up in the air, it could end up being a carb or EFI. If I go with EFI, it will probably be LT1 since the cost of that conversion is less than a modded LTR setup.
One example of a combo I've been looking at is LT1 heads/intake with a ZZ9 cam.
Or a Performer RPM intake with the ZZ9, and AFR180s.
A small streetable solid roller is a possibility also. Some pretty small ones are available, custom order.
I don't really want a maxed out motor cause one of the reasons I bought an F-body is because I want something that uses less gas than my pickup.
I'd like to get 20+ mpg hwy.
Anyhow... Just hoping to touch base with any of the few, fellow 327 Thirdgeners out there.
What's Brewin?

I don't have one, but I do have some thoughts on it
The 327 is legendary. But a manual trans would be helpful to work that motor to potential. Besides, I think it'd be a great touch of nostalgia. That way you could just nix the need for low end grunt and make it a screamer. In the 70's my ex-girlfriends dad took the 327 out of his impala because it blew the rear, put it in his brothers big-block camaro, and kept ripping the shocks off that when he fed it some clutch.
I think it's worthwhile for you to go through with your project, and that would be awesome if you kept it neat and clean looking. There's too many barn beaters out there that never get any credit because of lack of attention to detail.

TPIROC is working on a 327 build up. Chevymad has a 327 in his formula. Runs strong. Mild cam - put down the same power as L98 cars in our dyno gathering last year.

My bottom is pretty strong with a 4 bolt, a factory LJ crank, and aftermarket rods. But I didn't do my homework before I bought pistons, and I got hypers when forged would have been best. Now n/a is what I have to stick with I guess.
My ideal combo with the bottom I have would be the LT1 intake with AFR 180s and some matching cam.
I keep hoping that someone here will have that combo, but it's a long shot I know.
Maybe I'll be the first.

I have to be smog legal for Ca. In different countys that means different things, and the county I live in is classified as a "rural county" So we're required to go through a smog insp only once, at the time of sale.
However, it's still illegal to dismantle the original smog equipment. Unless you're replacing it with a later model engine...
Where am I going with this?
My car's an 85 and it was offered with both a Qjet and TPI. So either of those would be satisfactory, also the LT1 would be OK.
I'm looking for a cam that would burn clean enough and have a smooth enough idle to not be a "giveaway". But I'd like it to give me some nice top end too. Some sources tell me that a ZZ9 cam is good for that purpose, but maybe there are others too.
Help on this is appreciated. Thanks

I have a stroker that I'm putting together, but for now my 327 is nearly ready, and I'm looking forward to "fun".
Thanks for the replys everyone, tell me more... What was the entire combo? How'd it do at the track?

check this out....Iwas running a 3000 stall ..3:42 gears with a 700r4. And yes traction was an issue..
I never had this combo at the track. but it was pretty quick...I parted out the motor to buy the setup I have now. 327's seem to be worth more in pieces that they are whole,,

Thank you, That was helpful.
I'm pretty sure that I'll like my 327 til I get my 383 in, especially if I put some good heads on it. Then I can use those same heads on my stroker.

I will possibly have one in my car in a couple months. I sent down a LJ crank down to the crank shop and my machinest is ordering a couple sets of KB pistons and C&A aluminum rods. Should be fun I just havent decided if I want it in a 4bolt block yet.
