paper clip trick
I hear all the time about using paper clips to bring up codes. What do you do? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Turn the car off, take a paper clip, piece of wire, whatever you want and jump the 2 hole things in the upper right hand corner of the connector. Then turn the ignition to on but don't start the car. You get code 12 three times then any problem codes three times each. Do a search, there is even a diagram to show you what the upper right hand corner is
Although I think ive heard of useing the upper and lower right connectors on some cars.

Mine has the 12 pin diagnostic connector. From right to left it is 1,2,3,4,5,6 on the top row and 7,8,9,10,11,12 on the bottom. Take the paper clip and stick one end in the #5 terminal and the other in the #7. Trun the key to on and wait for the grounded code '12'. It will be a flash, short pause, flash, flash. Then a long pause, 12, long pause, 12. Then it willstart flashing codes after that in the same pattern. When it is finished, it will flask '12' again. If you don't get the '12' code, it isn't hooked up right.

Huh. This is what it says on our home page, and in 2 other books I've read.
Just seems weird that your car is the only one that uses those pins.
DISPLAYING THE TROUBLE CODES
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6), then turning the ignition to the on position without starting the engine will flash the "Service Engine Soon" light in the following sequence: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause Following this "12" code repeating three times will come any trouble codes stored, flashing each of them three times. If you do not see the "12" flash three times, your diagnostic circuit is defective.

Interesting that he can get those codes by jumping pin "5" & "7" or pin "B" & "G" as they are labeled. Pin "B" is for the ECM signal and pin "G" is for the fuel pump signal. The proper pins to jumper is the pin "B" & "A", or if you want to number them. It would be pin "5" & "6" going left to right and top to bottom. Here is a schematic of the 89 RS LO3 ALDL.

3rd, I'd probably stop doing it that way. It is conceivable you are getting it to ground through the fuel pump, but were I you, I'd do it the right way. Name them anything you want, but stop doing it it half-assed.

I don't think there is a half-assed way to do it really and I am not trying to be an assh0le or anything. But here it is. I tried the 6 and 12 terminal combo and they didn't work. There is nothing in the 8 terminal, so I can't jump there. That's when I was told to jump the 5&7 combo (from another web site) and it worked. If that isn't correct, ok. Here's a pic of my connector. Show me which ones to jump other than the 6&12, cause it doesn't work that way.
Thanks

So, will 5 & 6 (A&B) do it correctly?? I don't want to do anything to the car that will fry the ECM or something. I want to do it the correct way. As I said, that way I described earlier in the post is what I was told to do. Let me know.
Thanks for the help.

I'll steal from Vader:
The one marked ecm diagnostic request and the ecm ground. I just don't know what putting only 5 volts to your fuel pump will do to it over time.
