Engine: 5.7
Transmission: T-5
Here's a legitimate question....
How do you select the right cam?
What determins the intake/exhaust/duration and lobe?
Can you go to a higher lift if you have a larger intake (more cfm) and an open exhaust?
And what about the duration and lobe?
And lets just say you can burn a new chip or reprogram accordinly.
Am I making sense?
How many people are using the "Hot" cam?
Of those people, the rest of there engine setup is probally different one way or another, right?
So how can someone suggest a cam without actually testing it with their setup.
This is getting to long for me. I don't like long topics.

Chevy High Performance recently did a good article on cam choice. I don't think it's this month's issue, maybe last month. Hope it helps.

if you want a good suggestion, call comp cams (dont have their #) www.compcams.com their tech line is great.

Yeah, Paul your right, I've been getting CHP for the last 5 years and have a stack of mags. Now that you said that I remember the issue your talking about, I'll look it up.

street driven cars with stock converter "auto" should have no more than a 224 @.50.
I have a comp magnum 224/224 cam with all stock parts on my lg4 even the comp is intact and it runs great at higher rpm above 2000rpm. "Lose a little gain a little" the camshaft motto
SSC. BTW summit I think oct of 2000 has that article about cams.

Cams need to be very carefully selected to match the intended use of the motor and to the other components working with it. Cams don't act by themselves, they work as a partnership with the heads, intake, and exhaust. One of the best methods I used when doing research into head/cam/intake combinations was to keep a very close eye on this board to see how various combos worked. I am working towards a car in the 12 second range at the strip, so I kept my eyes peeled for anyone else with an L98 naturally aspirated who was running in the 12s. I kept looking at the signature lines of the people on this website, trying to see how well their combos really performed versus how they thought they ought to perform. Talk is cheap, I wanted to see the time slips.
After looking at enough combos and correlating it with 1/4 mile performance a solid trend starts to develop, and you begin to understand what parts combos work well with others.
There are some excellent books on the market to help you understand camshaft selection and design as well as how to match cams to other components in order to create a well balanced system. Balance between components is the key to a well performing system.
