Clearance trouble with alternater and Valve Cover
Anyone ever had any problems with the post, for battery wire, on back of alternater hitting the driver's valve cover? I just got rid of the centerbolt valve covers because they would not seal. I think Dart was off in there machining and the threads for the center covers were up too high and the covers couldn't be tightened enough. So with the great option that aftermarket heads have for either perimeter or center bolt, I figured I would use perimeter covers and see if they where better. I bolted the new perimeter covers right on and then tried to install the alternater. The back of the alternater is hitting the cover and can not be lined up to bolt to the engine. Is there another alternater that will bolt up to the L98 serpentine bracket with the battery connection in a different location and the same four pin connector? The car is a 1988 T/A.

You will need to be careful but you can take the screws holding the alternator together and reclock the back so the stud doesn't hit the valve cover.
I've done it but can't explain the exact procedure. Seems it was pretty simple though. Just remove the screws and turn the back WITHOUT pulling it apart.

Good call SM. I loosened the 3 bolts holding the alternater body together and turned the back of it counter clockwise so all the bolt holes where moved one spot too their left. No more problem with the stud hitting covers. Only fly in ointment, was the bracket that goes from the header to alternater no longer lines up to it's threads on alternater. I will fab up a braket to secure the back of alternater too the intake tomorrow. Thanks.

Glad it worked for you. I haven't had that bracket to the back of the alternator on my serpentine belt setup from an '88 for years. I've had no problem with it but YMMV.

I took a ballpeen hammer to my VC. Just enough right get the boot around the connector on. I have to remove the belt and two of the alternator bolts to get the VC off now, but that only takes a minute or two.
