just installed ported TPI.. car won't start.. why?

I'm thinking that it may be spark related. The distributor is installed right, I know it's not 180 off because I marked it before removing it. I triple checked the plug wires to make sure they were on the right posts on the cap. Now here is where it gets weird: If I crank it with the distributor coil-to-cap wire connected, it sounds like it's struggling badly, as if it were missing. I heard a few 'pop' sounds too. After every starting attempt, I get a fuel odor too. If I try to start it with the coil wire off, it cranks normally, it just doesn't start. This leads me to believe that it's a spark problem. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I want to get this car on the road tomorrow. thanx

evedently something was messed up but it worked and the timing was perfect. so check the rotor to wire position on the cap at 1TDC

good luck mine took me the weekend to figure out

Its probably just where you have the timing at that is causing the problem. You may be a 'tooth off' so to speak, I use that term loosely because its kinda misunderstood. Just keep turning the cap one way or the other until it decides to fire up. If you run outa space to turn it, and you are getting closer to it starting, thats where the tooth off deal comes in. Then you just have to pull it, turn it one tooth, and adjust it till it fires up.

Glad to hear you finally have that thing ready to fire up.
