Slight exaust smoke
I have a 84 Z-28 with a slightly built 350 in it. I just recently went through the motor and it is now running real well(13.82 at 101.33) my first trip to the drag strip and it was 106 degrees that night(I live in Arizona)this was about 5000 ft. air, i'am sure there is more when I get the combination dialed in better and get some good weather conditions. Anyway I put screw in studs in the heads when I was doing the job, I put locktight on the studs when installing them. Now just once in a while I get real faint smoke from the exaust at a idle. The smoke disapates almost instantly. At times it looks like steam, and as I said it doesn't do it all the time. The heads were done when I did the rebuild. I have been wondering if it may not be sucking just a little oil through where the studs are in there, and I need to pull the studs back out and put some kind of sealer on them? Has anyone out there ever heard of such a thing and/or does anyone think that this may be my problem? I have pulled the plugs out and checked them and they are just fine no oil on them. I'am realy frusterated with the thing, this has been the job from hell all along and now I have it running good but have some smoke. If anyone has any ideas I would sure like to hear them!!! The studs don't go into the exhaust. They go from the crankcase where the rockers are, to the water jacket.
If you put Loctite on them, get them out and do the job right IMMEDIATELY!!! You are getting anti-freeze in your oil constantly with no sealer on them. They should have some sort of thread sealer, PST or Permatex 300 work best. 50 ft-lbs if they're the kind with the hex on the bottom.
The smoke is probably from the valve guide seals. You should put new ones on there at the same time you're taking care of the other thing.
