EST vs HEI
Is there any problems with droping in a vac. adv. HEI in place of the computer controled EST dist? Car's spec's are in my sig.

why do you want to replace the conventional way of controlling your car via computer, especially when the provisions are already there? If your car isn't running to par, then fixing something else isn't going to solve your problem.

Your stock computer controlled distributor is an HEI, just a different type. The only reason you'd want to put in a mechanical advance distributor would be if you were converting to a non-computer controlled carb.

Why would I want to change the coventional way to control my car via computer? Without a data log system, scan tool, and a way to burn chip's, the computer's peramater's are about this wide / / . I consider mine as "the little box of retard's" under the dash! Think of your motor as your child, and the computer as being a live-in nanny. I tired of living under the bitch's rules!

i was going to say something about still living in the 60s but from your profile i see you grew up with carbs like me. actually i grew up with FI in the 60s on a gas class chevy the old man raced. i thought all cars had hilborn injection since the race car was the only one i ever seen the engine in.

You dont have to datalog to set the timing. Come to think of it, theres not much in the datalogs that would help you. Knock will only tell you if you have too much timing, and even the knock sensor isnt a good indicator of anything at times.
You can just plug in what you would normally run with a vac advance dist. into the timing tables and get the same effect. I have one single large timing table with nearly 300 individual points so tuning every point is just way out of the question. I just plugged in the type of timing youd get with a mechanical dist. and just left it. Works fine.
Its possible to get the computer to work with a vac adv. dist. The problem is that with the stock speed density your fueling will be off so youd have to go back and retune it to get the best performance.
