Mileage Question?

Hey Dudes on my car, evertime I get gas the car takes about 13 gallons. I don't run it totally dry. It has a 15.5 gallon tank. If I am figuring things correctly about my mileage, I go about 180 miles (Between gas fill ups) This comes out to about almost 14 miles per gallon around town. I have a 5.7 TPI, with no major mods, just exhaust,(No Cat) and rapid fire plugs. The car has 100,000 miles on it. I drive her pretty fast sometimes, but for the most part baby her. Before my tune up, I was getting around 11 miles per gallon around town. Does 14 MPG seem to be ok for around town driving for my vehicle? I have never been able to figure out highway mileage yet.
Thanks in advance for the info!
Mike

You explained my gas situation perfectly. Everytime I get gas, I fill it up and get about 12.5 gallons into a 15.5 gallon tank. AndI get about 190 MAYBE 200 miles to a tank when I drive around town mostly. I don't have any major internal engine mods either. I'm getting an MSD 6A... hopefully that will help it out a little. I'll let you know how that works out.

I usually get anywhere between 250 and 270 driving around town and if I'm on the highway I can get anywhere between 290 to 320 depending on how hard I am on the gas and or how much passing and what not. I usually dump about 13 to 14 gallons in the tank on most all fill ups.

Well if you are geting that good of mileage poor boy, I better check some things out on my car. Because I thought 14mpg was not to bad, but you are doing great. I can never break 200 miles per tank around town. You are getting about the same mileage that I was getting with my 89' 3.8 liter V-6 Delta 88. How the heck you are getting that kind of mileage out of a 5.7 I do not know. What gears do you have??
Thanks guys. Anyone else have any comments?

I know it doesn't really apply, but in my carbed LG4 305 I get about 20mpg in town and about 25-27 mpg highway. Despite the extra 45 cubes, I'd think you should be doing at least as well as I am, especially with fuel injection.

Car: '86 IROC, black and sharp
Engine: 305 tpi, bone stock
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 3.42 pos w/rear db
I have an 86 IROC with a 305 TPI, 700r4 and 3.42 pos. I get between 20 and 21 mpg around town. I've only been on one trip (500 plus miles with the back loaded with gear) and between the interstate (70 to 80 mph and running around home (no gear and doing the speed limit - mostly) I got 23 mpg on each of 3 fill ups. There is only one way to calculate mpg. 1. fill the tank up each time (keep putting gas in even after the pump kicks off - you'll know when it's full), 2. write down your mileage off the odometer, 3. when you get gas, do #1 again, then #2 again, 4. subtract the first mileage number from the second mileage number, then divide the miles travelled by the gallons of gas you put in it. I always hear people say, "I drive back and forth to work 6 or 7 days on a tank of gas, it's about 30 miles round trip and I put 10 gallons of gas in it so that's about 20 mpg, right?" Wrong. By the way. I'm tickled to death with the IROC's mpg. The 81Z (350/4spd) gets 13 to 14 mpg around town and 17 on the highway. The 83Z (305 HO and 700r4) gets 11 mpg in town with no trips to figure highway mpg. Have a nice day.

My '88 GTA, 5.7, has seen over 30 mpg several times on hilly-curvey country roads.

Most of the time I average 26-28 mpg.

Even on tanks where I have several track runs, I still get at least 18 mpg.

My car has headers, cat-back (no cat), Wells MAF, ram air/cold air and several other mods, and has seen 14.06 at 99.5 at the track. All for fuel mileage, of course---wink-wink.

Most TPI cars were factory rated at mid to high teens in city driving and mid-twenties for highway driving.

If your car isn't getting that kind of mileage, there probably is something wrong. Ever check tire pressures or front-end alignment?

Perhaps a lighter right shoe is in order! lol

Hey Breathment & L98IROC89, it looks like we all get about the same mileage. Everyone else seems to be getting alot better than us. I don't know what else to check on my car. It runs perfect. When I tuned it up, the old plugs were just perfect in color (Light Brown) so I am not running rich. The car Idles perfect. around 600 RPM's. My timing is right. I don't think it is my heavy foot, but I will really see this time since I have been the easiest on the car with this tank full of gas so far. I do use the air alot, that might have something to do with it also. I thought 14 mpg wasn't that bad, but I really don't know what else to do. My older 1989 Delta 88 with a 3.8 V-6 got worse mileage than some of these guys are getting with there V-8's! I was getting about 17 mpg's with that car around city with the air on all the time, and about 21-23 on the highway. And that car was a elderly owned beauty before I got it. Maybe my Maybe our TCC lockup isn't working. How do I know if this is working right?

Get on a flat road where you can cruise well above 50 mph. Keeping your foot on the accelerator (not using the cruise control), very lightly press on the brake. If you TCC was locked, it will unlock with the brake pedal pushed down a little bit, and your RPM's should come up a couple of hundred. If nothing changes, your TCC isn't locking.

I get about 19-20 mpg commuting, about 24-25 all highway, and my TCC does not lock up. Carbs CAN get decent mileage...

Oh, if you want to know the real capacity of your gas tank, put about 1/2 gallon in a can in the trunk, and run the tank completely dry. Put in the gas from the can, drive immediately to the nearest gas station, and see how much it holds.

Hey man, if I find that my TCC isn't working properly, how do I fix it? Also my gearing in the rear is 3.27's. This could be part of the reason that my mileage isn't as good as some of the other guys in here. I am going to check my TCC for sure though.

Well I have 3.27 gears also Breathment, and this has to be some of the prob. But I just tested my car today on the way home from work, and my TCC is not working properly, so I know this is part of my mileage prob. I am going to post a question about this.

You said you're gonna grab an MSD...remember dennis got one and he said his mileage improved dramatically like 50 + miles per tank.

Maybe I will have to try some MSD ignition parts, it certainly won't hurt any, and maybe I will even get a little more power.

I am doing 14 mpg around town, and have to check more into my TCC. I think that is the only thing that is causing my mileage to be a little worse than it should. It could also be that I put a 170 thermostat in, and a cooler fan switch, so the motor might be burning a little more gas until it warms up. Also, some of you in here say "driving around town" I know that "around town is a little different for all of us. Where some people live it is more highway type town driving, but where I am at it (near Tampa) it is bumper to bumper-stop go, lights every friggin mile, 95 degree weather etc. OHH alright, I will just try to stop making excuses for my poor mileage!
Take care guys

Careful about the MSD, i got one and noticed all of no difference in my car. I think for those of you who it makes a big improvement for, it may be a sign that something else in your ign. system is below par.

Last time I checked my mileage I got 17mpg. I have gotten as good as 25mpg on the highway. This is with my LB9 with 700r4 and 3.27 gears. Then again I have gotten as bad as 11mpg when im on it.

Gas mileage is a funny thing. I have two cars, a 92 3.1 mfi firebird and an 87 ws6 Trans am with 305 tpi and 3.27 gears. Both of my cars are automatics and I was getting about 22-24 in my v6, around 20 in town. I'm getting about 18 in town with my v8 and around 23-25 on the highway. Ofcoarse, I'm not an easy driver, I used to run the hell out of that v6. I don't run the 8 as hard, but I don't have to.
