How many knocks is too many?
So last time I took her out for a spin (been a while now that I lost the rear..sniff) I had the scanner along with me and I used to get only a couple knocks, but now that I rebuilt the top end of the motor I got about 150 in 20 minutes. Umm is this a bad thing? I checked the timming, and it is back to what it was before. It was really hurting the preformance becuase the computer kept retarding the timing everytime I wanted to step on it. Do you think it is time to reprogram the crapy hypertech or is the chip doing its job knowing that these knocks can hurt my engine.

Has the knocking stopped after you set the timing back to stock?
And yes the chip is doing it's job. It's main change on an EST is to advance the timing as quickly (and a little more than stock) as possible. The EST will still retard the timing enough to get the knock to subside, but then that Hypertech chip is telling it to advance that timing ASAP. It's a massive argument going on inside the ECM. "MORE!!!!", "NO!!", "YES!!!", "NO!!!".
Try it with the stock chip and advance/retard the base timing as much as possible with no knock counts. That's really the safest way. Just make sure that you use at least the same, or higher octane fuel after that.
EDIT: Oh, and make sure the engine is nice and warm before you set the base timing. That way it isn't set too high for higher operating temps. We all know that more heat means more pre-ignition.

Hmm, might be time to try setting it back some. I only have it at 7 BTDC base. I will make sure the engine is very warm before checking it next time though.
