What's with the 160 thermos?
I've searched the board and either I didn't see it or it wasn't there.
When changing the thermostat from stock to whatever it is 160, 170, 180, 195, to make your engine run cooler... im guessing.. Do you have to change or modify your chip? and if you do, Why is this so?
what does changing the thermostat really do..
I didn't see this in the tech article and would be really nice if someone put it in there,,,,
thanks

No, you don't have to modify your chip when doing a thermostat change. Acctually, most aftermarket chips require a lower temperature stat because it increases your timing and can lead to detonation if the engine gets too warm. I live in CO and I use a 180 stat in my car and it runs perfect. I would only use a 160 if you live in AZ or FL or some hotter than hell climate.

The benefit of the 160* stat is that it reduces underhood temperatures causing cooler air to enter the intake. This will result in minor HP gains.

Keep in mind, and some people will get pissed, but lowering your coolant temp will cause reduced cylinder temperatures, which results in a less efficient combustion of air/fuel.
You actually lose power by running an engine too cold. fuel economy can suffer as well (especially on computer controlled cars where the stock chip relys on a stock stat setting)
However the reduced underhood temp will allow denser air in, so it pretty much equals out.
It's the farmer way to produce a cooler intake charge.
Generally, the hotter the engine (or rather, the combustion) the more power it makes. The challenge is getting as much air in as possible (cold air/force induction)
if you want to get proffesional about reducing underhood temp. purchase header wrap/insulation, setup a CAI or ram air, insert air vents to remove as much heat as possible from the engine bay.
then again, changing your stat is much easier.
