If you are talking about the ones where there are only 4 bolts (2 per cylinder head), then go where 14 and 17 are listed (IIRC).

There is no right or left side cylinder head. Either can go on either side.

details.......

One thing to remember, however, is that even though the heads will bolt up to either side, the front side and back side accessory bolt patterns are not the same!! Make sure that you are installing the heads in such a way that the accessory hole patterns are correct for their respective sides. I call it "one up, two down," and "two up, one down." One end of each head has two holes drilled up near the valve cover rail, and the other one has two holes drilled down just above the deck surface. If you get these reversed, you might not be able to get the stock accessory brackets to bolt up correctly. It's just a thought, but I don't want to see anyone have to trash two brand new head gaskets (and possibly his/her back if the job is being done with the engine in the car!!) to redo the whole thing. Good luck.

That's hilarious... best one I've seen all morning.

The heads are the same. The same casting, no difference. Identical in every way. Same bolt holes in all the same places.

Instead of thinking of them as "front" and "back" bolt patterns, think of looking at them from one side, say, the exhaust port side; if you look at them that way, both heads will have the one bolt pattern on the right end, and the other bolt pattern on the left.

It is therefore NOT POSSIBLE to bolt them onto the block in such a way that the accessories won't go on. Whichever head you bolt onto whichever side of the block, the right bolt pattern will end up in the right place.

The ONLY DIFFERENCE between them occurs long after they're cast. That difference is (or may be) that one head has a plug where the temp gauge sending unit would go, if that head had been installed as the other side originally. Personally, I always specify that the machine shop give them back after cleanup, with ALL plugs removed; that way I can put them on whichever side I like.

Having them remove all the plugs (core plugs included) is also a good means of assuring that the hot tanking cleans as much as possible.

I really hope that your little taunt makes you feel better about yourself. Rudyard Kipling, very impressive. After all, it's far better to be silent, and thought an a$$hole, than to utilize the anonymity of the internet to remove all doubt. Have a great day and try not to scrape your knuckles on the ground too much.

Whether his comment was warranted or not, your information was misleading.

oversight

The ambiguousness of my information was due to a simple OVERSIGHT. Please check my previous posts/responses and judge for yourself. I would NEVER willfully mislead or misdirect anyone, period. You'll see that my language has (up until now) always been respectful and my information has always been delivered with a positive tone. I have been "behind the eight ball" way too many times to ever even consider throwing someone off for any reason. If you wish to issue me a warning, feel free. But don't you dare do that if you don't do the same for Sofakingdom. It's only fair. Fact: I just finished a head swap. Fact: Not everyone has been doing these sorts of things for a long time. My error was just that, an error. It wasn't an attempt to screw anyone up. When a person is in uncharted territory, sometimes "big picture" issues get overlooked. Learning from experiences such as these is part of life. If you were interested in maintaining a sense of decorum on these boards, don't you think it would've made sense to censure him/her as well? That post was from 10/17.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with making a mistake, we all do it sometimes.

I didn't mean to flame you

Sorry to vent on you. I understand that my statement was a bit misleading, I'm just saying that my mistake didn't justify the response. It took two hours or so for you to get to me, but nobody got to him in the 6 days that have passed between his "two cents," and my post. Any reasonable person could probably tell that I wasn't trying to throw anyone off just by the length of my post. Would you waste the time that it would take to write an entire paragraph just to mislead a total stranger? Probably not, and neither would I. I figured that you were the moderator and were trying to come down on me.

I don't intend to flame anyone. All I intend to do, is to dispense the truth, and dispel ignorance.

However, that being said, getting your panties all in a wad about having a flagrant deliberate error pointed out, doesn't make up for posting the bogus disinformation in the first place.

I see no "ambiguousness" in your post, or any other excuse, for the erroneous post. The bit about the heads being different on the 2 sides is WRONG, plain and simple. Anybody that has ever seen and handled heads for ANY brand of V configured motor, is familiar with their symmetry. Just walk out to your own car (assuming of course that it has a V motor of some sort) and LOOK.

People come to this site to get the truth. When you don't genuinely know a thing, it doesn't help anyone, to post blatantly wrong stuff. Most of all, it's no help to someone who also has no idea but who needs to know something for some reason.

Opinion is a different matter. People can bash on Comp about their noisy XE cams (even though any mfr's cam that similarly pushes the envelope of valve action will produce similar noise), or extol the virtues of the Firebird compared to the Camaro (even though they're the same car with different sheet metal wrinkes), etc. etc. etc., but since that's all just opinions, it doesn't exactly carry the same weight. After all, we all know what opinions are like..... Mustangs.... everybody has one and they all... And even though about 99% of that sort of thing is nothing more mindless drivel and running off at the mouth, at least it's not likely to send some poor soul on a left turn off the paved road and into the weeds.

Yes, we all make mistakes; I willingly include myself on that list, after all, I'm sofakingdom, I can't avoid making them. Lots of them. But I try to keep my mouth shut (and my keyboard too) when I don't know what I'm talking about.

So, I don't mean to offend anyone intentionally, that's just not my way. All I'm here to do is to spread the truth. But if someone gets offended by the truth.... then I'm afraid that's just not my problem.

This got me chuckling out loud at work...
Well we've all learned something now, and it's all in good fun.

Let us get one thing straight right off the bat. I have absolutely no problem accepting the fact that I'm wrong about a thing or two now and then. But, make the punishment fit the crime. Who got offended by the TRUTH? If you choose to attack someone for what is believed at the time to be correct, that TYPE of response is simply uncalled for. There are plenty of ways to point out the mistake of another individual that don't involve personal attacks, or demeaning comments. You don't know me at all, but judging by your immediate and venomous attack (oh, something about opening one's mouth and removing all doubt, rather than being silent and thought a fool) I know quite a bit about you. Is the purpose of "spreading the truth" best served by that kind of vitreol? Heck no and you know it. If you really want to know why I responded that way, look no further than your attitude, NOT to the point you made about my oversight. One thing is absolutely certain: If you were standing in front of me when I made my incorrect comment, there is no way in he11 or anywhere else that you would've responded that way, PERIOD. Hopefully, you would've been more polite. I suppose the information age has made "lions" out of "lambs." Bottom line: there is a huge difference between "conscious" and "unconscious" ignorance. Just ask the woman who didn't know she married a drunk until one night he came home sober.

Frankly, at the time I was doing the swap, I was running a little behind schedule, but rather than screw something up, I just ignored what in hindsight should have been obvious. It was my first cylinder head swap. I'm big enough to take full responsibility for my mistake. Can you take responsibility for your attitude problem? So far, that answer is a resounding "no." (Again, it's not the TRUTH that offended me) Your life must be fantastic because you seemed to take great pleasure in getting very angry over something that in the grand scheme of things, amounts to a little bit of wasted time. Not even yours, mind you. *** forbid anything of any real consequence ever befalls you. I consider this matter closed. And, for the record, there will come a time when you say something that you believe to be constructive, that will later be shown to be completely off base. I hope for your sake (yes, yours) that you DON'T get jumped on the way you jumped on me. Good luck, you'll need it.
