I was also moving at a higher speed, passing a car on US-74 in North Carolina. All of a sudden a puff of black smoke & it was done.
My results were a broken camshaft. I hope your isn't that bad.

There were no leaking fluids I could see. The smoke was a white or grayish color. Could it be a fuel pump? Sure hope it is something simple. Stranded in Indianapolis with car in Danville
Thanks

When my coil died, it ran OK until one day, from a stop light, I hit the gas and it was missing a lot. When it did fire, it shot out these huge plumes of smoke and sounded like a shotgun. Maybe a mile later it fried totally. New $10 coil fixed that. I'd recommend going back to the car with the following:
1.) Compression gauge
2.) Spark tester (or a new plug you'll not be using)
3.) Standard 3/8" socket set
4.) Multimeter
5.) A few feet of 10-12 gauge wire
As well as maybe a gallon of fuel, a can of spray starting fluid and maybe a fuel pressure gauge if you feel so inclined. If you do decide to test the fuel pressure, be sure to bring a set of open-ended wrenches to remove the fuel line. Test for Spark, Fuel, Compression and see which one you're missing and remember that a weak spark may not be enough to really do anything.
Sounds also like a wire burnt if that's where you're distrribution block is -- mine is right near the passenger's headlight.
