CAr wont start back up after running it

Alright, we finally got the car to drive. Reverse works great, but when I go to put it in drive and go forward, the car dies and then it wont start again.

Today, I started the car, warmed it up and it did the same thing! Last time, the fuel PSI went from 5 to 10 psi! I found the plugs were fouled. I didnt change them today when I ran the car, but I did after it wouldnt start again, but it still wouldnt start.

any idea why it wont start back up? I have to let it sit over night. I try turning off the F/P and cranking the motor in an attempt to unflood it (if that is the case) and it doesnt help.

The dizzy gives spark, I pulled a plug and grounded it, cranked the motor and the plug got spark.

I have the fuel PSI at 3-4psi now. I turned it down BEFORE i started it today, so it ran with that PSI just fine.

I thought it might be a bad relay, so I swapped the power position (i have a custom relay box I built) but it didnt help. The dizzy gets 12+ volts. Brand new battery. Brand new plugs.

Could it be the A/F ratio? It's setup right for idle, but when it is warm, or revving, it is off? I bought the carb new, and I live in Kansas, approx 500 ft elevation.

What can I check? When I'm cranking it, trying to get it back on, I can smell fuel. I have open headers and my firewall is full of holes where i've removed heating/wiring stuff.

Also, I pulled the dip stick and the oil smells like fuel. I will be changing the oil this weekend. Could that be affecting it at all?

Any ideas to try? Thanks.

I heard a nasty rumor that the west edge of Kansas is actually closer to 501' ASL. Couldn't prove it by me, though.

It sounds like you have a little carb work to do. The higher fuel pressure you were running may have overcome the needle/seat and flooded the carb. There may be some tuning involved, too.

Get the oil changed once you figure out the fuel problems.

Can you elaborate a bit? Any idea why the car is dying when i put it in gear? Is it possible I damaged the needle and float? How can I check?

The darn thing works great while idling, or i'm revving it, but once in gear, it dies and wont start again. I havent tried warming it up, then turning it off and trying to start it again. Maybe I should do that today and see what happens.

Mine did that when I had a major vacuum leak.

100% gut/rebuild, only like 2 vacuum hoses to pcv.

My vacuum leak was at the rear china-wall, not a vacuum line.

Well, i figured it out. With some help from a friends dad, and ppl on TGO, I took apart the carb. I checked the floats and found the distance was just a hair off. I fixed that problem (if it was one), and while looking through the carb manual, I saw that it recommended that the user move the lever that controls the pump as close to the carb as possible for more fuel delivery. Well, thinking about my problem of too much fuel, I moved the lever to the last spot (less fuel per pump). Guess what?! I drove that beast around the parking lot, pulled back in and turned the car off. then, I waited a few seconds, then turned it back on. It fired! The car didnt bog once while driving.

As a test, I moved the lever back to the middle position and tried to start the car, it wouldnt start. I tried a few times, but nothing. Same thing, it would turn and turn, but not fire. When I first tried, it started to fire 2-3 cylinders, but then wouldnt.

I put it back to the new spot on the lever and tried again, but I think the motor was once again, flooded.

I will try again tommorow. I think i'm out of gas.

I changed my oil and it was about 90% fuel.

Now I have a problem of when I gas it, it doesnt give the response i'm looking for, I dont think i'm slipping cause the pressures are normalish.

Gonna go back to stock shifter from my pro-ratchet. Not as fun as I thought.
