fuel tank sending unit
On my 89 which has not been cranked in over a year(vats issue again), any way am getting ready to get car going again. About a year before the latest vats issue had to replace fuel pump. Glad I farmed this out or think I am any way. After about six months of new pump notice car has shutting off isssues when less than half a tank. Then fuel gauge goes crazy for a few days then goes to full and stays there. This was not a problem as fueling the car often, seemed to keep her running best. Then the vats issue and car has been parked for over a year. So now I'm going to get it up and running. Was going to relace pump again and look at sending unit replacement. Wow 500+ bucks for sending unit. Is this a repairable item or is there some where to find it cheaper? Want to try and keep everything stock if I can. When I parked the car (305) it was getting about 22mpg. Would like to start driving her again and give the z28 a break.

I too am having problems with my sending unit. I coulnd believe the cost of a replacement either! Geeze man, get real.
However, I asked around and found that it is simply a potentiometer on the inside, so there isnt anything can can go bad really.
check power to the gauge cluster, check for shorts in the wiring coming from the tank, check fuses, etc. It is most likley an electrical problem.
My gauge reads empty or full (depending on which polarity i give it), but wont show anything in between. Dunno if I have the power hooked up, I should but who knows, I do everyhting half-assed and have to do it MY way (which isnt always right...)
