one of my friends trucks did something similar, he just poured a can of injector cleaner in the tank and that fixed it.

Ive got close to the same problem...
my 85 305 takes close to 7 - 10 seconds of cranking to start...
when its running its nice and smooth...
and before cranking i can hear the fuel pump and seems ok...
did a complete tune-up and it still does the same thing...
Im stumped... anyone.. please help!!!

i changed the fuel filter around last tuesday, the funny thing with the old filter is that the guts had boken loose and where wiggling around in the housing.i was thinking maybe dirt cloged the injectors but like i said once its running its fine.

With low fuel pressure it would idle decent and cruise decent but would stumble when you crack the throttle (for lack of pressure) and probably fall on its face about 3000 rpm

No one's mentioned the fuel pump relay? I'm shocked, replace it and your problem will probably be solved.

So long as his oil pressure switch is good the relay can die and all he should experience is a hard start (until he builds oil pressure), not a no start. Now if one has already failed and the other is on the way out....
Any codes? Have you pulled the plugs when it doesn't start? What do they look like? The times it does not start, is your security light on? These are tricky without the car at our fingertips.

Oh yea, it's an '89? Forgot to add... When you have the no start situation, for giggles, unplug the Maf and see if you can at least start it (albeit probably not running too well). If you get a winner there, swap out the MAF relays.

its not the securtiy thing cus its been disabled with a resister,so the sercurity light never comes on.i have not checked the plugs when it does it but i would think its a fuel related issue cus the car starts right up if i squirt alittle carb cleaner in the throttle body.after its running its fine.If i let the car sit for an hour or so and try it its fine and starts up.I just got this car about a month ago so i dont know to much about this tpi stuff.. sorry guys.

Its the distributor, change out the pickup coil and the ignition module and it will fix it. I've fixed three tpi cars with starting problems just like yours by rebuilding the dist.
